I don't care anymore, I'll discpline your kid if you are not around to do it. Today this kid was hogging the slide, just sitting there while DD was waiting patiently. I told the kid to slide down so DD could have a turn too. DD was sitting behind him and he turned around and smacked her. I pointed my finger and him and said "Hey! No hitting". No mom or nanny in sight! I know I startled the kid because he sort of jumped and then slid down the slide. [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

I think you handled really well. What the heck else could you do? Can't ignore hitting. [ Reply | More ]

ITA...though you and I and the few agreeing posters are in the minority. Actually, I think kids really respect people who set and stick to certain boundaries...too bad it's not their own caregivers setting the example. [ Reply | More ]

yeah I basically gave him the same tone that I give DD when she hits, the "I mean business, you better listen to Mommy" voice. [ Reply | More ]

I can't imagine ANYONE who would think you were in the wrong. If a kid hits my kid, and there isn't a parent around to scold, I will definitely do it. What choice is there? [ Reply | More ]

op: i used to be really nervous about doing this when DD was little, now if someone snatches a toy from DD or hit, I'll tell the kid to quit it. [ Reply | More ]

np - well...I think you have to be careful about not being too helicopter-ish. Kids have to also learn the law of the jungle to a certain extent. [ Reply | More ]

i'm not a helicopter mom, but i don't like DD snatching toys from other kids, so why should i let other kids do the same to her? [ Reply | More ]

but to a certain extent kids need to fight their own battles. Getting pushed or hit is one thing, toy grabbing another. [ Reply | More ]

i usually tell both of them whose turn it is (that DD was playing with it) and that we'll let him play with it when she is done. i usually do this when DD doesn't take it back and starts to cry. [ Reply | More ]

I have a feeling your dc is your first and only. You will be much more laid back about parenting if you have another. [ Reply | More ]

np: they need to learn how to negotiate the world on their own a bit too---obviously if hitting is involved it's different. [ Reply | More ]

they are the same ones who are too busy talking on their phone. Same ones who were always offended when I pointed out their golden retriever just took a dump at the dog park (when I was single and took my dog to the dog park). Are you sure that was MY golden retriever? [ Reply | More ]

np: how old are the kids? Honestly, when they're a certain age, most parents I know let them play on their own w/o being on top of them--sometimes they do something you miss, but I have no problem with someone telling them not to do something that's hurtful to another kid. [ Reply | More ]

good at 2-3 they should be watching. I don't care they have to take responsibility for their own children [ Reply | More ]

of course, I'm just saying that as the kids get older and more independent, sometimes you're not aware of every move they make. Of course if you know they're prone to hitting or pushing, you should be more on top of them. [ Reply | More ]

or: agree, that's why I asked how old the kids were. I remember when my ds was that age I couldn't figure out where the moms of the older kids were, but now that he's almost 4, I understand a bit more. [ Reply | More ]

i have no problem letting DD run around without me next to her when she gets older, or learning how to stand on her own when someone takes her toys. She actually is good at defending herself at times. i just hate it at this age, when nannies and moms don't watch their children. [ Reply | More ]

related question....was in the park with my dc. he was about 10 feet in front of us and fell on a dirt path. dc was fine and got partway up--hands and feet still on ground, looking at us and crying. woman closer to dc reached down as if to pick him up. i said...it's ok, he's with us. i was walking, not running, to dc because he was clearly ok and i didnt' want to make a huge deal about it so dc would stop crying. woman reached down and picked dc up anyway...just lifted him up to a standing position. i didn't freak out about it and said nothing, but i was surprised she touched my child in that circumstance (dont' know if woman had kids or not and i'm sure she meant no harm). should i have said something?
