If you can only send your kid to private school for some of the time (ie, only elementary or only secondary), which do you think is more important? Is it OK to send your child to a mediocre elem school if it's safe? [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

If we could do one, we'd do private high school (assuming getting in wasn't an issue). [ Reply | More ]

our elem and middle were so - so - but my kids had excellent grades and test scores. Good teachers. Very diverse student body. Got into an excellent private hs - I would do it again. [ Reply | More ]

I've thought about this a lot, and I've decided I'd rather send dc to the best possible school for the elementary years even if it means they go to a so-so school later on. [ Reply | More ]

why would you do this though? elem years are basic, later years have more impact on college they can attend [ Reply | More ]

When dc are young and getting the fundamentals, and a love of school and learning is being instilled, I'd prefer dc to be in the best possible environment. I think that, along with parental support, is what provides the base for everything that comes later. As dc get older they can take more responsibility for their learning, and a bright, motivated dc can get a very good education almost anywhere, as long as the school isn't downright BAD. Understand, I'm not talking about a terrible school for the later years, just not a "tt" school. However you want to define "tt". [ Reply | More ]

but in most NYC schools, and even many decent publics (not the most wealthy burbs), they won't get the college counseling or frankly, peer group of college bound, academic friends. [ Reply | More ]

we're going to do highschool and middle too if we can afford it. spoke with a friend in education and she thought it was smart said studies showed that academic success before 6th grade was more due to what parents were doing at home then what the school was doing. [ Reply | More ]

FWIW I know people who do it both way. Many kids go from private school to Hunter in 7th or Stuy/Bronx Sci in 9th. Many kids go from public school to Dalton or Fieldston or HM or Trinity in 4th-9th. [ Reply | More ]

Dalton has about 8 openings in 6th grade and maybe 20-22 for 9th grade. Many of the kids admitted in 9th grade come from private K-8 schools. The girls schools add fewer kids than this for 9th grade. [ Reply | More ]

Trinity adds 50 kids in 9th grade. HM adds quite few in 6th and 9th. [ Reply | More ]

I went to private for high school, on partial scholarship. I truly think that high schol is where you shoudl spend your money. It sets a tone for your life long friendships, college education, ambitions, etc. [ Reply | More ]
