WWYD? In a new home this summer with a pool. The sliding screen door doesn't lock - anyone know of any child safety products or should I just buy a new screen door that locks? Should I just buy a gate? (The pool is fenced in but still ...) [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

definitely buy a new screen and if your house has an alarm, have it beep when a door is opened... [ Reply | More ]

Pool alarm. It will sound when anything drops, falls, or jumps in the water. Obviously, you turn it off before swimming. [ Reply | More ]

consumer reports reviewed those alarms on dateline and they don't work half of the time... [ Reply | More ]

They NEVER work if you aren't home to hear the alarm. That is one big failure. One of my neighbors was out when some kids climbed into her backyard (drunk) and one drowned in her pool. But they can be a great addition to an otherwise strong security system (gate, fence, etc). [ Reply | More ]

OK, yes. First they sell alarms for the door that sounds whenever it opens, plus get it to lock. easy to change doors if you have to. Also, a fence is NOT enough. Check out the safety nets for pools. We lived in CA and so many toddlers learn to open gates, climb the fences. Drowning is so common its scary. We had the net when our kids were little. I highly recommend it. [ Reply | More ]

yes. The downside is its not attractive, but it is really the best safey device there is imo. I was never good at getting it on and off, but my dh could do it in minutes. Here is one-http://www.gizmodo.com.au/2008/02/wonderful_toys_turn_your_kid_into_batman_with_awesome_cape-2.html [ Reply | More ]

there is a product called catch a kid which is like a big volleyball net that goes ove the pool.they are located in upstate NY but will travel. also invest in water safety classes for your kids. get an alarm for the screen door not the pool and be vigilant this summer with your kids and other poeple's kids. if you are ot comfortable do not have other children over unless they come with an adult to watch them. this is the website http://www.katchakid.com/ i fyou are scared, do soemthing abotu it. don't be paralyzed by fear. If it is your home you need to get a safety net and just be vigilant. again if you are not comfortable with kids coming over then put the net on and tell your friends no swimming. end of story.
