WWYD: My girlfriend suffered a traumatic brain injury and has become a nasty, mean spirited, and sometimes violent person. Her husband left her and has full custody of the dc. I feel terrible for her and want to help/support her. But she is so awful! I just can't spend time with her anymore! [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

I would try to remember that it's the injury and not her. My grandmother has alzheimers and she gets so nasty. I know that it's not her but the disease. [ Reply | More ]

she won't ever be the same as she was. if you don't like who she is and you weren't in a committed relationship, maybe you need to move on. she was married when you started seeing her? [ Reply | More ]

I think she means "girlfriend" in the friend way, not the lover way. [ Reply | More ]

I mean girlfriend as in a female friend. There is no romantic connection between us. But yes, she was married to her now ex-husband when we met. [ Reply | More ]

She was violent with the dc. He had no choice but to divorce her and take dc away. [ Reply | More ]

That's frightening. So the divorce is final? [ Reply | More ]

Yes. Divorce is final. Visitation to be reviewed twice a year, so if she improves she may be allowed to see her dc. [ Reply | More ]

My parents were injured in a car accident and my father had emergency neurosurgery. Now, almost 2 years later, he is okay -- but he'll never be the "same". The circumstances are different (his injury wasn't classified as "traumatic brain injury"), but as he recovered, there were several episodes like this (he was disoriented, agressive, nasty, lost language function). I don't have advice, just sympathy -- I can imagine (to a degree) what it must be like for you. In your case, I'd limit the time that I spent with her (duration and frequency) and remind myself over and over that it's not her, it's the injury. Hang in there. [ Reply | More ]
