What would you do if your 17 year old son had sex in your vacationing neighbor's bed a dozen times and left the used condoms there? [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

np he is 17. Sounds pretty typical IMHO. Not to say he shouldn't be punished but he sounds normal [ Reply | More ]

At 17 I would've been scared of my parents finding out that I'd had sex. I wouldn't have used the neighbor's house and not bothered to clean up. Well, maybe a quickie on their sofa, but not their bedroom [ Reply | More ]

I'd like to say the same but I once had sex in a classroom in college and we left the....um.....evidence behind for the next day's 8:00 class to find. Kids do stupid things [ Reply | More ]

I'd make him write a letter apologizing to the neighbor. I would also ground him - no cell phone, TV, video games, computer for non-school work or other privileges. I'd probably make him volunteer somewhere as well for 20 hrs to give him a better appreciation for the community he lives in. [ Reply | More ]
General Topics 05.27.08, 03:30 PM Flag

that won't give him "appreciation" for the community and, as a non-profit coordinator, we generally don't want to be loaded down with teenagers dumped on us by concerned parents. volunteering is great if you have useful skills to offer and a true interest in the work, not if you're sent against your will to build character [ Reply | More ]

np that may be true but can't someplace like habitat for humanity use pretty much any unskilled labor? [ Reply | More ]

Habitat for Humanity is actually pretty competitive and many sites are booked months in advance by dedicated, engaged volunteers. [ Reply | More ]

really? I had no idea. But still, seems like there would be places for this kind of thing. Although I must say I am a little conflicted about using volunteerism as a punishment. [ Reply | More ]

I don't really see how volunteering at an animal shelter (clean up there), for example, requires useful skills. [ Reply | More ]
General Topics 05.27.08, 03:33 PM Flag
»
Conveniently, I've worked in animal rescue and unwilling volunteers aren't any more welcome there than anywhere else. Someone has to supervise and train volunteers, even for "menial" labour, and dealing with people who don't really want to be there and people who are only going to be there for 20 hours is just annoying and not really worth it. Our organizations exist for a huge number of reasons, but we're not here to cooperate in you punishing your kid. [ Reply | More ]

Ask the neighbors what you can do to make things right. A new bed would be nice but maybe they will feel that is too extreme. [ Reply | More ]

It's about respect. He needs to learn that what he did was very wrong. Also, assuming 17yo have sex and there is no stopping that, maybe he is not used to picking up after himself. Does he clean up at your house? [ Reply | More ]

I don't know about all the ORs screaming for a new bed, I mean, wtf? he had sex in it, he didn't smear feces all over it. He can go clean up the mess, buy a new bed set (sheets, pillows, blankets I mean) and apaologize profusely for being a dolt. [ Reply | More ]

Make him buy them new bedding. (I think a new bed is absurd.) And twelve Friday/Saturday nights volunteering in a homeless shelter. Teach him to respect what having a home means. [ Reply | More ]
