What broadway show would you recommend to a family who's visiting NY for the 1st time. They are a couple in their 40's with a 14 year old son. They want to see a musical & can see only one show. Would Xanadu, Lion King, Wicked, etc be suitable? Would like to take them for something that will be fun for all of them - they are visiting from overseas & this will be their first broadway show. Thanks! [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

No! I don't think a 14 yo boy would want to sit through that with his parents. Besides that, I don't think it's the best of Broadway (Tony or not.) I'd say Wicked, Spamalot (if their English is very good and they get that kind of humor), Lion King is terrific. Actually I think Gypsy is best bet. [ Reply | More ]

If they can get tickets, South Pacific is supposed to be great, and is also a classic. Lion King or Wicked would be fun for all. Not sure about Xanadu. [ Reply | More ]

Wicked would be first suggestion. Xanadu is campy and not "real musicial theater" [ Reply | More ]

How sophisticated are they? Most of that is utter crap. I'd try for Gypsy or Spring Awakening. Even a Chorus Line would be better. Of what you listed, Wicked or Lion King. [ Reply | More ]

Neither G or SA would be great with a 14 yo son. [ Reply | More ]

SA maybe, but Gypsy is absolutely fine. I took my 10 and 13 yo and many of their friends have seen it too. [ Reply | More ]

Music for G or LK is great and is more "classic" musical theater v. SA which is good in its own way but kind of "experimental" [ Reply | More ]
