not worried about that, i'm very up on politics and current events etc...more about the entertaining part of it...gracious hostess type things...dh is very senior, this person is the head of the gig, older and opinionated etc.. [ Reply | More ]

well, avoid politics, first of all. but i'd keep it simple offer drinks, take their coats, thank them for coming when you sit down at the table, tell him you're interesting in something dh told you about him, but really, your job is entertaining the wife [ Reply | More ]

np: I think the best way to be gracious is to just imagine how you would like to be treated and act accordingly - think of most comfortable you have been as a guest and try to replicate for your guest [ Reply | More ]

that's a good idea...bc they are in their mid-70's i'm feeling more nervous than I would be normally...but it doesn't matter how old they are, the important thing is to make them feel welcome and comfortable in our home. [ Reply | More ]

also, make sure you have soft, pleasant music playing -- it always adds to a nice mood. [ Reply | More ]

my mother also always says to sit on the toilet that guest will be using and look around - because this is the place that people will have time to see how clean your house is - sounds odd but is so true (not really about guest's comfort) [ Reply | More ]

if conversation lags ask her how she and husband met - ask about grandchildren - people usually love to talk about that stuff [ Reply | More ]
