Is anyone considering the gifted and talented program at 230 in Brooklyn? Does anyone know anything about the school generally and the program specifically? [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

What I have heard is that there is a lot of homework in the G&T program (e.g. 1 hour nightly in first grade). I believe it is one class per grade in the G&T program. [ Reply | More ]

It's not unique to NEST. The OP and OR are talking about PS 230 G&T, and I hear similar reports from friends w/ dc in other G&Ts. This is a DOE issue, not a NEST issue. [ Reply | More ]

Disgusting. Complete misunderstanding about what G&T is. [ Reply | More ]

The operative word here being "some." And I know dc at non-G&T publics who get just as much homework. The dc of my df is at the Ella Baker school, which is supposed to be so progressive and nurturing, and she was getting ~45 minutes of homework every night in K. Other df w/ dc at PS 110, the gen ed NOT the G&T, were complaining at their dc had close to an hour per night in 1st grade. I hear people complaining about this more and more. [ Reply | More ]

That's a recent change... my DD is in 3rd grade and there are 2 G&T classes...but the 1st grade only has 1 class. Which is tough b/c you can get stuck with a teacher who mightn't be the best match for your DC, without having any options besides opting out of G&T. [ Reply | More ]

Can we talk to what you folks mean when you say "homework." Are you talking about reading or worksheets/etc? I don't care if the book comes from one of our bookcases or from the school. A little kid reading for half an hour is no onerous homework. [ Reply | More ]

not OP, but can you say what the homework expectations are? [ Reply | More ]

the expectations are that the homework gets done, basically. 1st and second grades have a daily reading log and at least two worksheets. third grade adds a third worksheet and major projects every month or so. it's not that tough and high-achieving kids are usually super-motivated anyway. and they offer extra help for students who are having trouble with specific parts of the G&T curriculuum. ^^for instance, ds has trouble with writing (physically...hand cramps, etc) and there's a Thursday morning handwriting group. [ Reply | More ]

I went to the open house and was impressed, but the school seems overcrowded and underfunded. Given that the model of G&T is enrichment not acceleration, are there the resources for real enrichment? How do the G&T kids relate to the rest of the school. Are they together for recess and lunch and class trips? I'm also wondering about homework. Is it drill oriented or actually useful? G&T is sirt of self-selecting, socially. [ Reply | More ]

That said, dcs have a lot of friends form outside that group. The homework is helpful... basically expands upon the classroom work. G&T is pretty self-enclosed honestly. [ Reply | More ]

I know that it differs from school to school now, but isn't it all supposed to be a centralized G & T program next yr. [ Reply | More ]
General Topics 05.27.08, 05:46 PM Flag

what does that mean? i thought the centralization had to do with trying to secure equity in admissions, not with the curricular content. isn't the idea with gifted kids that they think outside the box and the teacher is meant to nurture that? [ Reply | More ]
