Thanks to UB I just found out about BOB books. I've never seen them in B&N. What isle would they be in? I am trying to assess my kid's reading skills. How do I know at what grade level she is at? Right now she is devouring those Rainbow Magic books and other girly books like Ivy and Bean and others. [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

If she is reading Rainbow Magic on her own BOB books are not for you. They are for very beginning readers (think lower level than hop on pop) If your DD us reading Rainbow Magic on her own that is like a 1st or 2nd grade level. [ Reply | More ]

^ Go to this site http://www.lexile.com/DesktopDefault.aspx?view=ed&tabindex=5&tabid=67&tabpageid=313 and put the book in. It gives you Lexile level and you can get grade level reading from that [ Reply | More ]

interesting site -- but really difficult to equate to a grade level, because the lexile ranges are so broad and overlap (rightly so, but still...). [ Reply | More ]

rainbow magic is technically 3rd grade level, though very easy third grade -- ramona books, also technically third grade, are much more challenging (vocab and structure-wise). [ Reply | More ]

She reads a lot of it out loud to me but loses steam along the way. It requires a lot of mental stamina for her to get through each chapter...she's not 'flying' through the book, kwim? [ Reply | More ]

Yes, so it's not about not knowing words. That's the same with my dd who doesn't have stamina yet. [ Reply | More ]

the bob books are in boxes and teach basic phonics. Your dd is beyond them. IMO, they are pretty boring for kids. "Reading Level" varies depending on the system used to classify and isn't just about the books a kid reads for pleasure. [ Reply | More ]
