I am flying to Australia soon with 2 dcs, aged 5yo and 3yo, and am dreading it. Any tips from btdt moms pls on how to make it less painful for me and people around us ..worried about all the schlepping and potential for tantrums and bickering ..they can be terrific kids but meltdowns a reality, especially for 29 hours plus in little seats ..tia [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

It will be fine. I flew with 2yo and 4.5yo and they were fine (and I was 8 weeks pregnant). Just bring pjs for sleeping, some new toys, DVDs if your DCs like them. Best of all, upgrade and fly business if you can on the upper deck. [ Reply | More ]

ahh that would be nice ..but it's massively pricey to fly biz to Australia ..would rather use the money for something else! Did you take loads of snacks etc ..if so, what is good in the air? [ Reply | More ]

I've never flown that long but I do fly often w/ dcs (but only 3hrs). My suggestions would be to hide a few small, new toys as surprises...a new DVD or new coloring book w/ markers or just anything that is portable that you can 'surprise' them with. Also, I'm a big fan of giving kids information and schedules. Say "WE're going to color and then watch the DVD and then get into our PJs and sleep"...it may help them w/ the 'endless' feeling of sitting in the seat. [ Reply | More ]

I took 20 hr flights recently with 2 DS's - 6 and 2. Tire them out in the airport as much as possible, even find an empty part of the terminal and do exercises, sprints etc. My older ds slept very well, through meal service even, using blindfold and we got one of those kid neck rests. I wouldn't have thought of the blindfold but they gave them out on the flight and now he always uses it. New Dvds - we borrowed lots from friends of all kinds of movies they hadn't seen. I flew to Fiji w/1 & 5 yr olds, really no problem. Stick to reg schedule - after dinner, bush teeth, change into pjs & read bedtime stories then tuck them up in blankets for "bedtime". Otherwise, yes, bring one bag for snacks, one bag for books, videos, crayons & paper, etc. Don't forget spare clothes for them & at least one spare t-shirt for you (in case of accidents_ [ Reply | More ]
