If you are getting an epidural, delay it as long as possible. Try to relax and breathe deeply through the contractions. If you do get the epidural, don't let them "turn it up" so you can't feel anything. Otherwise it will be hard to push. When pushing, bear down like you are going to poop and make low noises, not high ones. [ Reply | More ]

^^^ They will offer you an epidural very early. You do not have to take it when it is offered. The nurses would rather you have an epi because it keeps you quiet. It's YOUR labor. [ Reply | More ]

My first birth was medicated and my second unmedicated. For the second I read a Bradley book and had a friend act as my doula. My advice to you is to research your options and not be dogmatic. Labor hurts -- it really hurts -- and first labors very often go pretty long. Try to be as unmedicated as you can, but be prepared to use an epidural to give yourself a rest if you need it. My other advice is to do pre-natal yoga. The breathing and stretching you do there will really help you through the labor. [ Reply | More ]
