2yo dd wants to hear the same fairy tale 20 times before she falls asleep at night. What can we do to stop this? She cries if we leave before she falls asleep. [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

tell her you will read it 3 times (or whatever number is ok with you) then you are going to leave. Do it. Consistently. It won't hurt her to cry [ Reply | More ]

you have got to let her learn to fall asleep without you. get a chair and sit next to the bed the first night. each night thereafter move the chair closer and closer to the door. eventually you will be on the other side of the door and she will be fine. She just needs to know that you are there and right now cannot process that unless she sees you. Get a great book called "I love you All the time" there is a line at the end that says "even when you can't see me, I love you all the time" [ Reply | More ]

op: it's not just me being the room that she wants. she wants to hear my (or my DH's) voice and fall asleep hearing it. [ Reply | More ]

does she just want you there, or is the reading the vital part? would a book on tape have the same effect? maybe she needs distraction to drift off (i do). if the thing is you being there, maybe leave the door open so she can hear you, or just sit there and fold laundry or read your own book silently? op: she wants to hear me reading. if I stop and just sit there, she would continue asking me to read and get upset if I don't. [ Reply | More ]

OK but it is still an issue of your presence. so start working on being there but not reading and eventually you will be able to leave the room. sure the first nights will be hard and there will be tears, but eventually she will learn the new program and hopefully get with it. [ Reply | More ]
