If you are ebf-ing how do you leave the apt for more than 2 hours at a time? Where did you nurse in public? ANd how do you leave the apt WITHOUT db for more than 2 hours and not need to pump? [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

if you are going to EBF, you have to get comfortable nursing anywhere and everywhere. I did it in resturants, park benches, stores, whereever. If there was a quiet private place to go I would always opt for that (i.e. a dressing room, ladies lounge, etc.) but otherwise whyen hte kid is hungry you feed him. Otherwise you can't leave your house and that makes Breastfeeding a total drag on you and you will come to hate becaause it will feel like a chore. [ Reply | More ]

as for the leaving without DB that is definately tougher. If I could stretch it and not take the pump I would but I would be totally engorged and might leak. Otherwise I planned for 2 hour trips or took the pump (or the kid). [ Reply | More ]

np: I agree. And I would leave for more than 2 hours after the first month or so - my breasts stopped getting so engorged so quickly. [ Reply | More ]

my db was my ball and chain when I was nursing. I felt like I couldn't leave him for more than a couple hours at a time. I eventually got up the courage to nurse in public. I would just pick a location that was out of the way, and would wear a button down shirt. Just unbutton the bottom buttons and push the shirt out of the way as necessary. No exposed skin at all. Most people would not realize I was nursing. [ Reply | More ]

I did the button down with a light t or tank underneath. Truly, most people do nto realize you are nursing, they think you are cuddling the baby. [ Reply | More ]

I never felt 100% comfortable breastfeeding in public... i wish i had. i had some "go to" places pre-planned -- bloomies was a big one, did the gap dressing room once. did a park a couple of times, but really wasn't that comfortable and db didn't eat well. i was never out more than 2 hours w/out db while bf-ing. i weened at around 5 mo (went back to work at 4 mo) [ Reply | More ]

I would nurse lots and lots of places....Starbucks, restaurants, bench in Central Park. If you need to leave DB for longer, ytou build up a little freezer stash for caregiver to give db. If it will be more than 3 hours and you really can't bring a pump, you can hand express just ot make your self comfortable. You wan to try to get db on a 3 hour time frame...much better than 2! You need to reframe your reference. Don't think of ebf as restricting, but freeing. No bottles to pack, no formula to make. Food source is always with you...safe, sanitary and comforting for baby. The youngest dbs are incredibly portable...you can wear them or push them around just about anywhere you would want to go. Restaurants, exercizing, socializing, shopping. Nursing makes this even easier. No refrigeration or heating required. [ Reply | More ]

I nursed everywhere in NYC - in rocking chair in Buy,Buy,Baby, at dinner table in Century Club, in middle of Yoga class. No one ever made one comment, frankly no-one even noticed. Just slip baby under shirt & people don't even notice she's there! In beginning I never went anywhere more than 2 hrs away. Thank goodness this is NYC, you can get anywhere & do anythg in under 2 hrs! [ Reply | More ]

personally, i like those hooter hider things. (i also hate bfing in public). db is 7mo now and i am starting to wean, but previously, i avoided leaving the house for more than 3 hrs at a time. (if i left db, I'd pump right before I left) [ Reply | More ]
