How do you handle ILs attitudes about other ethnicities? They have the usual stereotypes & attitudes of their generation (in their 70's) but I don't want my kids exposed to their thoughts. Not only that, if they are talking about a person and he/she isn't white, they feel the need to say something like "he's black" or whatever - even though it's not pertinent information. call them on it especially if they do this in front of your kids. Talk to them and tell them this is something we don't want around our kids. If you feel weird telling them have DH talk to his parents. I have no issue telling someone to not talk like that around my kids. I can't stand racist [ Reply | More ]

you can't prevent your kids from being exposed to their thoughts. just make sure they know you don't share their opinions. They'll form their own opinions through your example, not ILs' [ Reply | More ]

np: you can prevent this for a while. You are the parent and if the IL's are going to be nasty in front of the kids, they won't see the kids [ Reply | More ]

OR: I was going to say "depending on the degree." if it's just ignorant, I wouldn't address directly with in-laws. but if it's nasty, then I would either say something or limit exposure [ Reply | More ]

the problem with ignorance is that they won't change. They are set in their ways but hopefully they will be willing to respect your feelings and watch their mouths when your kids are around [ Reply | More ]

I'm with this poster. My parents are like this. Not aggressively racist, just inappropriate and clueless. You have to balance out the need to be "right" and the benefits to having a positive relationship with your ILs. Didn't we all have prejudiced aunts and uncles that we rolled our eyes at behind their backs? Let it go, and let your kids know you don't condone or agree with the way they think. [ Reply | More ]
