If you started solids at 6mos, do you still give breastmilk first? My ped just said to start feeding them solids for 2meals a day, in place of BFing so that's what I've been doing and it's working nicely for me. But all these books say I should BF just before until she's 8mos. Opinions? [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

^^i noticed that many peds are not great at being bfing advocates. it all depends on whether or not you want your child to get nutrients from your milk or food. I personally thought that it would be better to get it from me (since they are not eating much solids) than food so I bf first until DD was almost a year or so. [ Reply | More ]

BF first, because for a long time BF is the main source of nutrition (much more nutritious than the little solids you would be feeding them). Also easier for them to learn to eat off a spoon and enjoy the experience when not too hungry. That's what I read and that's what I did and it worked well. [ Reply | More ]

i read the same thing, and i breastfed before solids at first (started solids around 5mos), and then went to ped at 6 mos and she said do solids first, then bf (i usually do it half hr our so later), so we do that now, most of the time. seems to work well. [ Reply | More ]

it depends--is she eating enough to get nutrients? is she still getting enough breastmilk? this depends on the kid [ Reply | More ]

she still bf's practically every 2hrs so i really really am liking the fact that if DH is feeding her solids i can actually have a period of up to 4hrs to go run errands/do something for myself and not worry about pumping. she seems pretty good with it. though once in awhile still hungry so then i'll bf after. my peds are pretty conservative about BFing so i feel pretty ok about listening to their advice on this one. but then i get worried b/c everything i read says to still BF.
