People in the ME are not white aside from being considered Caucasian in the 3-category racial system. But white and Caucasian aren't really the same thing. Persians, Arabs, etc. are generally considered racially different than Europeans. [ Reply | More

I am Arab. Race is socially constructed and "european racial theorists" are obsolete and pretty much cited to show how crazy and racist history is. But in our culture and in Western culture, Europeans are seen as racially different than those of us from the ME. No one would consider me white and one of the primary methods of racialization of those in the ME, including Persians, has been Orientalism. No, it isn't. That's one of the biases that Arabs hold against Iranians. Just because European racial theories are social constructions doesn't mean that they have no basis in reality. Arabic and Persian are distinct languages. Persian is Indo-European and Arabic is Semitic. The category "white" is just as fuzzy as Caucasian and Aryan, but it is the case that Caucasian and Aryan often have historically referred to racial features that point to "white." I don't think so. It's not that I believe in the "truth" of racial theories. Rather, I believe in the difficulty of affixing such labels on peoples. That said, I think that racial theories had their roots in distinct linguistic families. It is a fact that Persian is an Indo-European language, and Arabic is a Semitic one. While I don't think it is possible to affix racial traits based on language, the history of racial theories in Europe shows that in fact Indo-Aryans (i.e. Iranians) were considered Caucasian and therefore "white" -- whatever that means.
