I can't stand my SIL (who also married into dh's family). We are absolutely nothing alike, have very little in common. She's a girly-girl and you could say I'm au naturel.. How do I stop dreading every moment we're stuck next to eachother? [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

is she a nice girly girl? You don't mention that. Try embracing your differences. Maybe your kids will get a dif perspective on life [ Reply | More ]

She's just so prissy sometimes that it makes me cringe [ Reply | More ]

Try checking your contempt. Try to find points of connection rather than difference. Gossip about your husbands. Admire each other's children. [ Reply | More ]

I can't stand mine either. I'm no fashion plate but I'm decent - she only wears Disney logo-d clothing and their only vacations are to theme parks - ie legoland, Hershey park, Disney, etc. She is 42 yo. [ Reply | More ]

oh, I could go on and on. She then makes elaborate scrapbooks w/all the Disney stuff - thing is, if she was sweet, I couldn't care a bit about all that. But she isn't - she is a bitch - total! [ Reply | More ]

I feel you. I get this bitchy vibe as well. I also feel like she thinks there's some "competition" between who can be closer to MIL. [ Reply | More ]

ick - my MIL is dead, so no competition there. [ Reply | More ]

so all of your friends are exactly like you? That's very telling if you can't appreciate someone who isn't just like you. [ Reply | More ]

No, my friends are much more intellectually astute, easier to hold a conversation with. I can't seem to pull anything out of this woman to talk about! [ Reply | More ]

she really is nice, just not v. smart, so not a lot of BS. Now we both have kids it is a little easier - still hard though [ Reply | More ]

well that's a totally different story then how I read your post. If she's dumb, prissy and generally annoying, then you are in for a looooooong haul with her. Is there ANY redeeming quality about her? Any kind of common ground you can just chit-chat w/her about when you have to see her? Do you guys spend that much time together? [ Reply | More ]

We really don't spend too much time together, but I still find myself dreading family functions. We both work in education. That's it as far as commonalities. [ Reply | More ]

ok, so just blather on about that for a few minutes and then excuse yourself to use the bathroom and go sit next to someone else!!! Or just drink a lot. [ Reply | More ]

That's usually what happens. She's not a bad person, so I kind of feel bad for disliking her to the extent that I do. I guess there is some leftover resentment about the way she treated me at their wedding. DH was the best man and I did not show up in ONE photo. [ Reply | More ]

No, this was about two years before our wedding. At my wedding, I HAD to include her in pics because she was BM's WIFE! [ Reply | More ]

well if you weren't married or engaged etiquette (sp) says that you shouldn't include in the major wedding pics (the ones for the album, etc) b/c if you break up it's very strange to have to look at that person. However, if you weren't in ANY of the pictures at all, any of the 600 that are taken at a wedding, that is very strange and very rude, imo. [ Reply | More ]

Yes, you got it right. In fact, I had to ask the lead photographer to take a standalone shot of the two of us. The only other photos I was in were the bouquet toss - I caught it. [ Reply | More ]

I am pleasant, but try to avoid her as much as possible. I just have to be nice to her when I see her--I do not have to be her friend. [ Reply | More ]
