Let me see if I have this right. My September birthday dd is starting preschool in the fall, but when it comes time for kindergarten, if I want her to test for the magnet schools (hunter, andersen, etc), i won't find out if she makes the cutoff until i've paid her full tuition for the last year of preschool? bummer. It can be right. See this week's article about Little Red Schoolhouse. It depends a little on the particular schools' policies, but yes, this can happen. [ Reply | More ]

For Anderson, you would find out if you make it in the June before she begins K. For Hunter, you would find out the February before she begins K. The issue in the case of Little Red School is that the family was paying a year's tuition for SCHOOL (not preschool) in advance. [ Reply | More ]

It more depends on when your preschool tuition is due, considering you are at the school already. Hunter is fine - they notify you in Feb. Anderson may not notify until June, so it depends on when your tuition is due. In the case of LREI in the article, they were not already at the school. [ Reply | More ]

Not exactly. If you are testing for Hunter which is not under control of DOE, you will know before you have to pay the first installment of your private school tuition. What you are worried about is if your dc gets accepted to an ongoing and you have to pay. So, hunter is fine (if your dc is not accepted - sept birthday is iffy, you didn't say when in September and privates have varying cutoffs) - then you have no problem. Your dc will go public k, either your zoned school or a g&t. You will know if your dc has made the cutoff for the g&t before private tuition is due. You may not know which g&t she will be placed in, but you will know if she has a spot or not. If you are going to keep h er in preschool another year - talk to the school, they will allow you to wait especially if you are a current student. [ Reply | More ]
