The other day, there were 3 moms of PG kids. But all different ages. If you are supposed to find a PG kid per 1000 kids (99.9th percentile), then there must be a lot more. [ Reply | More ]

Actually, it doesn't work that way. For some bizarre reason, everyone is refering to this percentile chart, but each test yields different results. For example, the same IQ score in SB4 and SB5 do not mean the same thing. It's easier to get higher score on SB4 than SB5. You will not find 1 kid of IQ 99.9% in SB5 per 1000. it's more like 1 per 10,000-100,000 or more. It is very strange there are so many PG parents on UB. I wonder if they understand what a PG means. They don't make each IQ test to fit into that percentile chart. Some test have lower ceilings and some have much higher ceilings. Some tests are outdated. For example, same IQ score does not mean the same depending on when they took the test due to flynn effect. For example, if you look at IQ 140 in SB4 taken 1978 and in 2002, there would be much less people with IQ 140 in SB4 in 1978 than in 2002. Supposedly IQ score goes up 3-4 points every decade. Yes, I know that. I'm not talking about absolute IQ numbers. I'm talking about percentile of SB5. I know SB5 IQ numbers are much lower than SB4. [ Reply | More ]

It's the same thing. There are much fewer kids who score 99%tile or 99.9%tile in SB5 compared to SB4. [ Reply | More ]

right. this is the confusing part since, by definition, 1 on 100 kids get 99th percentile on SB5, and 1 in 1000 get 99.9th percentile and so forth. [ Reply | More ]

But that is the definition of percentiles. If they have miscalculated, that is one explanation (which means they must have overestimated due to flawed sampling in their research) [ Reply | More ]

np; she was lucky to have a tester who gave her decimal points but didn't pay for consultation? My dc's tester refused to give decimal point and even when we paid for consult, didn't show us subtests or results at all. [ Reply | More ]

Testers usually do not give decimal points unless you do consultation. In oder to get decimal points, you have to have all the subtest scores, which is what they give during consultation. It is important to see the subtest breakdown to understand the profile of the child. Then, what did you pay the consultation fee for? [ Reply | More ]

What was her ground to refuse to provide you with subtests breakdown? If it's below 99%tile, there is no decimal point. That could be the only reason I could see why. [ Reply | More ]

99th percentile, said hunter doesn't require it and once you make the cutoff, that's that. [ Reply | More ]

You don't need to have consultation to get the score for Hunter admission. People do consultation if they need to see the subtest breakdown and to obtain, if applicable especially for those above 99%tile, exact IQ scores. [ Reply | More ]

They only give you the percentile (not including decimal even above 99) if you don't pay and even if you pay, they won't necessarily give you all the info you ask for. Trust me. BTDT. [ Reply | More ]

Hunter's cutoff is not PG, just FYI.The 99th percentile does not equal a diagnosis of Profound Giftedness. It simply means the child is in the 99th percentile. Profoundly gifted children rarely actually fit into even a highly gifted school setting. [ Reply | More ]

SB5 allows you go beyond the ceilings. That's how you can get decimal points. [ Reply | More ]

huh? SB5 has ceilings, too. And a lower ceiling than SB-LM which is why some are calling for the return of SB-LM to estimate those whose IQs are truly out of the ballpark. SB5 can estimate only up to 160, using SB5 scale. If you max out, they're saying, SB-LM may be more useful than SB5 at that point. [ Reply | More ]

There is Extended IQ scale for those who score beyond IQ 150 or so in SB5. SB-LM is such an outdated test, nobody is taking it seriously. So far, I haven't heard of anyone who need to use Extended IQ scale in SB5 even if their score is beyond 150 in SB5. The threshold to use Extended IQ Scale in SB is extremely high. [ Reply | More ]

SB5 maxes out at 160 so the extended scale must be used after 150, then? Anyway, the scholars were advocating for SBLM only for kids who max out at 160 in SB5. [ Reply | More ]
General Topics 05.26.08, 09:11 AM Flag
»
No, nobody is suggesting to use SB-LM anymore. No institution is accepting SB-LM scores. SB5 is the best IQ test so far. As for SB5, even though the ceiling is 160, you can obtain, theoretically, much higher score if a person indeed has that capacity. As I said, no one has had the need as far as I know. That's how difficult to reach high scores in SB5. [ Reply | More ]

They accept 99.9%tile in verbal or non-verbal scores as well. In those case, their Full scale scores may not be above 99.9%tile. [ Reply | More ]

Davidson has very narrow parameters for acceptance. The scores must be there, one above 145 or 99.9%, but they also require the child demonstarte "extereme" precocity in one or more areas. They also have a portfolio option for acceptance, but the burden of demonstrating extreme precocity is heavier with this option. Our DC was accepted at just after 5 y/o with a 99.99% scoring. Davidson only accepts kids who have completed FIFTH GRADE, not four year olds! You folks are out of your minds. Your DC are not likely little Einsteins, they just test well, like mine, at a young age. Don't take that as if it's a diagnosis and you need to make sure they get treatment. [ Reply | More ]

This poster is referring to the Davidson Academy and teh academy accepts children who are ready for sixth grade work. The Davidson Young Scholar Program accepts children as young as 5, but used to accept four year olds. They have recently changed this policy, as well as admission requirements for the WPPSII III to score above 150. [ Reply | More ]
