I'm just TTC, so I admit I'm a little ignorant on these matters, but reading about the 5 years olds reading chapter books below makes me sad. I think it's because I didn't discover chapter books until I was 8 (Ramona Quimby), and I had all of my young childhood to enjoy the beautiful picture books for that age. I was never pushed, and grew to love reading on my own and did well in school. The idea of a 5 year old reading a chapter book sounds so forced to me. [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

some kids reading chapter books aren't being pushed at all, fwiw. I believe that if a child is ready to learn something, they should go for it. Childhood is a time when all children love to learn and explore...we need to take advantage of that time period and expose them to a lot of good stuff. [ Reply | More ]

Nothing forced about it. Nobody is pushing. So go spend your sympathy elsewhere. [ Reply | More ]

Have a kid before you judge others. Depending on the kid its not forced. [ Reply | More ]

If your child is eager to learn to read, but has a hard time learning with his/her own parents, don't feel bad because it's pretty typical. Research Reading In Preschool. It's a great tutoring service in NY. [ Reply | More ]
