np We've been reading these, too. Skip Farmer Boy as it's boring as hell and doesn't relate to the rest of the books. [ Reply | More ]

np: but a boy might love Farmer Boy. My 5 y.o. DS did. For OP: by that age we were well into reading longer books (my reading to him). DS's favorites: anything by Roald Dahl but especially James & the Giant Peach, The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane, Toys Go Out, E.B. White's books, Catwings, Pippi Longstocking, Finn Family Moomintroll, Mr. Popper's Penguins, most of the Little House Books. [ Reply | More ]

My dd loved Mouse House by Rumer Godden, which has a picture on every page and a lot of text also. You might look at Beatrix Potter books--they have rich text and lovely pictures. [ Reply | More ]

Pippi Longstocking, E B White, Lewis Carroll, Edward Gorey books(Amphigorey, Too & Also), Little Lit and some already listed by others her. Sometimes we'll do one or two picture books (Lyle Crocodile books, Dr.DeSoto or whatever- and she'll read a chapter or 2 of whatever book she's reading to herself before lights out. [ Reply | More ]

Even if it is a short book you can read it slowly. Take time to talk about the pictures, ask questions, etc. If you slow down it will help your child connect the text to the image. [ Reply | More ]
