WWYD? 5 yo dd was invited to a classmate's birthday party next Sunday. She has dance recital pictures at the same time. She really wants to go to the birthday party, and I don't really care about the pictures. She's one of the youngest in her class and some of the other girls are already starting to get cliquey. I'd love for her to socialize with them more. Problem is that the birthday party is a pool party. DD doesn't know how to swim. She'll get in, jump in (as long as she can touch bottom), play, etc. But she can't swim. Is this just going to make it worse for her? She's taking swim lessons again this summer (she took them last summer and finally put her face in the water). WWYD? [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

they usually have make-ups, and just take here to a photographer or a mall place some other times if she wants some pics [ Reply | More ]

Not overly worried about the pics. I can take some at the actual recital. But will her non-swimming make dealing with the other kids even worse? [ Reply | More ]

It's their neighborhood pool. I'm sure it has a shallow end. [ Reply | More ]

is it possible that other children at the party will not be able to swim as well? [ Reply | More ]

OP: I don't know. I need to call the mom and RSVP and I was going to try to feel her out to see if she knew. Heck, for all I know, she may want the parents to stay. I wouldn't want to deal with up to 20 five year olds in a pool. [ Reply | More ]

I would NEVER drop off my DC at a pool party. Drowning is a huge cause of death in children. Plan to stay. [ Reply | More ]

Yeah, that's the other problem. Her father and I are separated. It's his weekend. So it involves coordination with him if someone needs to stay. He's a manipulative, abusive asshat. Blech. [ Reply | More ]

OP: Really? It seems like my dd is the only 5 yo who doesn't swim around here. We didn't have access to a pool when she was really little and most other people around here did. [ Reply | More ]

Go the party. Before you go get a little strap-on floaty that's secure enough so she can paddle around without your being on top of her. Do you really think the other 5 yos at the party will know how to swim? I'm going to find a picture of the floaty I mean and post it below. [ Reply | More ]

Like this one: http://www.swimoutlet.com/product_p/1841.htm. My DD has this in purple. She loves it, even though it gives her a horrible wedgy. [ Reply | More ]

Thanks, but I think it would make it worse to put a floaty on her. I never see kids older than 3 in floaties around here. There are 5 yo on the swim team in our neighborhood and they have to try out because there are more swimmers than spots on the team. [ Reply | More ]

A post provides only limited information, but you seem overly worried about what the other kids and their mothers think about your DD. My 5 yo would never notice what other people think of her, and I don't think she's "poorly socialized." She's just 5. She doesn't swim, and the floaty lets her move around freely. It's also really given her the drive to learn how to swim, since she's experienced the freedom. Enjoy your child's strengths, and support her weaknesses until she's ready to strike out on her own.
