If you want an amazing reading teacher, look into Reading in Preschool. It's a tutoring service in NYC that operates mostly through word of mouth. The teachers are great, and the results are undeniable. [ Reply | More ]

No - started learning in preschool and really learned in kindergarten. [ Reply | More ]

She's FINE. It is unreasonable to expect a 5 yo to do more than this. She'll get it, don't worry. Both of my children were like this at 5 and are now in the top reading group at their good school. [ Reply | More ]

I taught my dd cause she was ready. If you dc starts to "read" things they see all the time then I think that is showing signs of readiness... [ Reply | More ]

How does a 3 yr old teach themselves to read. Yes, my dd picked up some words on her own - but you have to be taught to read....? [ Reply | More ]

She truly honestly taught herself to read. We read to her constantly of course, but did no kind of phonics work and she didn't do any reading websites or computer games. What can I say? [ Reply | More ]

^^^And my point is that for some (maybe many?) kids, something just clicks in their brain when they're ready and then they just take off in their reading. [ Reply | More ]

She did not. She memorized the words to the books you read her. Not the same. You have to be taught to read. [ Reply | More ]

No, she didn't memorize words. You could hand her any book and she could read it - or the NY Times or a magazine. She didn't necessarily understand everything of course, but she got the gist of most of what she read. [ Reply | More ]

My dc was the same. Learned to read on his own at 2.6 yo. He would look at words and work them out until he could read them. [ Reply | More ]

How could he work them out without someone teaching him to sound out words? Again impossible. I know some kids pick up words somehow on their own - my DD did. But phoenics is something you have to learn (e.g., the sound of ing is not something you just get without some help) [ Reply | More ]

I didn't read at 5, and had trouble reading in 1st grade as well. Ended up going to college, graduate school, ivy league. I really believe that people are going to make their kids hate learning if they don't let them have fun at school. Please don't worry! I wasn't a good reader until 2nd grade or maybe 3rd. Then I found Ramona Quimby and I wouldn't stop reading! [ Reply | More ]
