My reading poll is bumming me out. I'm the mom of the 99G&T boy who has no interest in learning to read, although he loves being read to and looking at books. Worried that if we go to a citywide G&T that he'll be far behind his peers. Anyone know any kids who went into Anderson or NEST K as non-readers? If so, how did they fare? TIA! He will be fine. FWIW, I went to Hunter and I did not start reading until mid-1st grade. Most important that he loves books. [ Reply | More ]

OP: Thanks! I don't think I started reading until 1st grade, either, and I've been an avid reader since I learned. Hope he'll be the same. [ Reply | More ]

I'm sure many will be non-readers and moms of reader dc's worry that their kids will be bored while other kids learn the sound of each letter. Your dc will be fine and will learn to read in due time. [ Reply | More ]

Thanks. He does know the sounds, just can't decode. Knows a handful of sight words, but that's it. [ Reply | More ]

OP: well, you've got me pretty much pegged. But when schools like NEST say they expect dcs to all be reading by the end of K, I worry about whether my dc will feel too pressured. [ Reply | More ]

they all read by the end of K. most do not at the beginning of K however. we are at anderson, and also have friends at privates, Hunter, ps9 G&T and ps166 G&T. all of the kids read by the end of the year save a few. almost none read at the beginning more than bob books ( maybe 1-2 exceptions). it all means very little and you need to relax [ Reply | More ]

Maybe she is the only one who has to work tomorrow and is pissed about it. Don't mind her. And your dc is a smart cookie and he will read when he's in school. No need to worry. [ Reply | More ]

I am hostile because I dislike insecure mothers who are overly invested in their dcs' specialness. I am surrounded by this type, and you know what? very few of the kids are all that special. its just a fact. you need to get a life outside of your dc's abilities. [ Reply | More ]

op: I will freely admit to being insecure, but not to being overly invested in my ds's abilities. He's great at some things and not so much at others. It's a mixed bag. I would understand your hostility more if i was bragging about him reading at a 5th grade level or something. [ Reply | More ]

They designed for kids who are learning to read which means most kids in 4 or 5 yos. Most 2 or 3yos don't start to read. [ Reply | More ]

well, they need to step up the pace and appeal of the website then, since most 4-5 yos get a bigger kick out of nick.com, and cannot be engaged by the slower websites that seem to be made for very young dcs [ Reply | More ]

all the kids I know at anderson did not read upon entering the class this year. many still don't. you need to relax. I have a 99 too. brilliant kid. never doubted him intellectually. when he got in the school, he began reading and jumped several years forward. I knew that would happen, because I know his abilities and usual pattern. I think people with 99 kids who are not that apparently smart always worry that the kid won't cut mustard. usually those kids are not the stars. btdt [ Reply | More ]

My 99 Hunter child did not start reading at all until summer after K --and was barely doing so at that point. By end of the school year she was reading at 3rd grade level. [ Reply | More ]

my dc got a 97 on the erbs, couldn't read before K, had no interest in learning to read. He is in a district G&T and is reading at the 'top' level in his class (now in 1st grade). He can read now (learned in K) but still HATES it. I make him read 20 mins a night and it's a struggle every night. I don't enjoy reading so maybe it's genetic. I turned out just fine. I think the obsession with reading (being able to and then doing a lot of it) as an indicator of intelligence is completely over the top. [ Reply | More ]

Her child had issues that were not typical of the rest of the class. The vast majority of that class did just fine without any intervention, and she is wrong when she said all the other kids were tutored. [ Reply | More ]

Yes, she asked, but she is not reporting the answers accurately. Of course we all did casual stuff, like playing with plastic letters on the refrigerator. But no, most of us did not do any explicit phonics or tutoring or drilling at home at all. [ Reply | More ]

You do realize that early reading is not an indication of intelligence or school success. (Math is more strongly correlated). Lots of parents push their kids to read early and that can backfire. Just keep reading to him that is the best you can do. FWIW, I knew how to rad before entering K, my sister did not - not until 1. She has a much higher IQ than I. [ Reply | More ]
