Anyone know what kind of psychiatric testing I should request to find out what's wrong with me? I want to find out for sure if I suffer from either depression or something else. I'm tired of seeing doctors who are guessing. Is there some type of scan or test that can be done? [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

there's not a true battery of tests like ultrasounds, etc. they just evaluate you and ask you lots of questions. i wish there was something more concrete... [ Reply | More ]

do you have any specific symptoms -- anything related to food, alcohol, drugs, relationships. is it depression or anxiety? [ Reply | More ]

no, its definetly anger. I seem to get to the "low road" much quicker than the average person, and lose my temper too fast. Probably due to being sexually assaulted when I was about 7, but I want to figure out if the only way to get better is to take anti-depressants, which do seem to help, but cause me to gain weight, or if there is some other effective type of treatment. np you don't have to take meds. If you feel you need them and they help then go for it. But many many people get through the issues that come from abuse with out them. Sounds like you need to find a good therapist who you can feel comfortable talking to about what's going on. Abuse can really do a number on people. I'm sorry that is in your life. It's a hard one to deal with. You may have to interview several therapists before you find the "right" one but keep at it. GL to you [ Reply | More ]

np. Have you tried psychoanalysis or cognitive behavioural therapy? Sexual assault issues overwhelmingly need to be worked out in therapy, not medicated. [ Reply | More ]

I've seen a number of different types of therapists over the years and am seeing one now, but a lot of the work involves questions about how I felt during certain parts of my childhood, and I have a lot of trouble recalling big chunks of those years. Its all foggy. Therefore, I start to wonder how I can get progress with all of these mental blocks. [ Reply | More ]

it's very normal to not remember everything and you don't have to remember everything to benefit from therapy. you don't need to recount everything you felt. have you found anyone who specializes in sexual assault survivors? [ Reply | More ]

Yes, as a matter of fact. My current therapist focuses on this area, and she seems to be the best one I've had. I guess I need to give it more time. [ Reply | More ]

np. you do that by talking. keep a diary to record your experience. have your partner or a close friend come with you to the psychiatrist to describe your behaviour. [ Reply | More ]

^^^ and you can do an extended evaluation that creates a much more complete psychological picture than "have you lost interest in things you used to enjoy?", etc. it may include Rorschach, an IQ test, art, etc. [ Reply | More ]

the brain is a very complicated thing and we only understand a small part of it. Psychiatry is an inexact science so you are going to have to be patient while they try a few things [ Reply | More ]

There's the MMPI - Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Index (I think). It can help rule out certain things, but mostly it's the therapist asking questions and making a determination. [ Reply | More ]
