I have a December 4.5 yo DD who is definitely ready for K. Hoping we get into a citywide so she can be in K because otherwise she'll have to do private Pre K. I wish the privates would let you skip a grade. [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

The jump from preschool (even full-day) to public or private K (or preK at an ongoing school) is an enormous one for most children. It is not simply an intellectual excursion into learning letters and reading. [ Reply | More ]

But that is exactly what she will be doing if she goes public....going straight from 3/s preschool to public K. [ Reply | More ]

hope you don't get anderson or nest. you sound like a complete fool, with such misguided nonsense in your thinking. you deserve to pay the $30K. also, I doubt you are headed to tt school. [ Reply | More ]

HUH? What exactly about my comment pissed you off? So confused about your agression here. What on earth did I say? if my kid goes public, she'll go to K. If she goes private, she'll go to pre K. She is currently in a 3's class. What's the problem? [ Reply | More ]

you sound like the same moron taking a reading poll in another thread. that same insecurity and clinginess. very silly, like you formed all of your opinions based on inaccurate UB info. its pathetic [ Reply | More ]

Honey, sweetie, darling, lover....the cut off ages for school admission are dictated by the DOE, not anyone here on UB. My young 4 year old will go to K if she goes ublic. That is the truth. No hype and hysteria here. Are you OK? [ Reply | More ]

not debating that. just the same misinformed nonsense about kids reading at tt and hunter, but nowhere else. having no sense about district G&Ts. you really deserve to pay for your private. 430K a year and most of the kids won't be reading until the end of 1st grade if you are lucky. you really must be the reading poll idiot. i am convinced now [ Reply | More ]

How about district G&T Kinder? You could apply to private next year. Private Kindergarten is accelerated anyway. [ Reply | More ]

BTW, my dd's private kindergarten classes had many chapter books meant for 2nd graders. I assume they have kids reading these books in Kindergarten every year to stock these books. Their writing was very advanced, too. [ Reply | More ]

Why? There are plenty of districtwides that are better than Nest. [ Reply | More ]

For the accellerated curriculum (please excuse spelling/typing)/ G&Ts are enriched, not accellerated. [ Reply | More ]

Really?> When we toured they said they were accellerated by 1 year. i assumed they meant in all areas. Not in reading/language/etc.? [ Reply | More ]

What do you mean by accelerated? Many private schools don't teach formal reading in K. [ Reply | More ]

Generally speaking, private curr is accelerated. I know they don't teach reading formally in K (some do), but many kids come in reading anyway and they will (not all privates but) accommodate. [ Reply | More ]

I didn't say ALL Kindergarteners, but when I toured TTs, all of them said some come in reading and some come in beginning to read and some don't read at all. When I said many, I didn't mean most but there are enough kids who are reading already that they stock these advanced books in Kindergarten book nooks. If you think about it, some kids are redshirted, so they're older anyway. Plus, many kids have top ERB scores and like Hunter that said some come in reading and some don't, you will see similar cases. I don't know about other schools. [ Reply | More ]

true at district G&Ts too. some came in reading at advanced level, some not at all. by nov/dec, all reading and many ( mine included) were severla years above grade level. [ Reply | More ]

At a number of private schools we toured (last fall) there were some very weak academics on display/demonstrated on the tour. Certainly not accelerated, and if anything, decelerated (I'm sure in the spirit of letting kiddies be kiddies, but . . .. ) [ Reply | More ]

NP, I have found that public K is far more advanced academically than private. I think privates ease into it and don't kick it up until later grades. [ Reply | More ]

skipping a grade might be fine now, but think about the puberty years -- do you want your kid to always be waaayy behind her peers? [ Reply | More ]

girls mature early these days. why do you think she will be behind? if she is at public, she will be with her peers. [ Reply | More ]

I am holding my DS back because he has a late December birthday. Academically he can do it but socially no. I think it would be unfair to him to be in a class with children almost a year older than him [ Reply | More ]

bet he couldn't do it academically either. I see at our public, the older kids are just way ahead of the pack. they are all very high scorers, but the kids who stand out the most are the older ones by far. of course your kid would do grade level work for K, but would hardly be a star among gifted kids who are a year older.
