If the tests were accurate, 98th to 99.0th percentile kids are highly gifted. 99th to 99.9th percentile kids are exceptionally gifted and 99.9+ profoundly gifted. But IQ tests don't always ID kids at these levels well, so they have to rely on other info (such as a whole list of abilities and developmental milestones met at a much younger age)... There are some kids who learn to read at 1.5yo and do incredible stuff but don't do well enough on SB5. http://www.educationaloptions.com/levels_giftedness.htm [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

My dc has tested as pg and has been pretty consistent on all tests ERB/OLSAT). According to the RUF estimates, he is definitely a Level 4 and not a Level 5. [ Reply | More ]

If he is level 4, he still tested PG? My dc is definitely level 4(EG) and didn't test PG. [ Reply | More ]

Are you sure he's not level 5 on RUF scale? His IQ is definitely PG... [ Reply | More ]

When I looked quickly he fit all of the Level 4, but only a few of the Level 5. [ Reply | More ]

He doesn't have to fit all of level 5 to be level 5. My dc fits all of level 3 and most of level 4 (if not all) but only a few of level 5 - but she didn't test nearly as high. I don't know but your dc tested that high so you don't have to go by RUF scale anyhow. He is definitely PG, regardless of RUF. [ Reply | More ]

Thanks. Now only if we can find a K for him! WL or rejected from all privates and Hunter Round 2 rejection. Just waiting on G&T now (oh, and WL at Special Music School too.) [ Reply | More ]

I feel for you. Honestly, even G&T or SMS won't be able to accommodate for your PG dc... Whatever school your dc ends up going to, I think you need to have a meeting with the teacher/school early in the year (with the IQ score report) and discuss possible concerns and nicely ask if they have dealt with similar situations... Maybe arrange Davidson Institute expert to call your school for you as well... [ Reply | More ]

I'm going to see how it goes at first. I did not get the best response at dc's preK when I tried to have this talk with them! [ Reply | More ]

may be why you got shutout of every school you tried for thus far. please relax and take one day at a time. I too have a gifted dc. I never said a word, and in each instance, the teacher has taken me aside and asked to discuss it. You cannot walk around talking about your kid's giftedness all the time. it is a huge turnoff, and if there is something that needs to be discussed with the teacher, you will know soon enough. I never said that is what happened! We had a discussion with his preK when they said that they were concerned that he spends too much time on his own or with books. THAT is when I brought it up and only then! [ Reply | More ]

^^^preK's response was that preK is all about socialization (and ita) and we should be worried (which I am not). [ Reply | More ]

Mom of pg dc here. Do you really think so? I just don't know how to handle his quirkiness sometimes. Right now he is fine, but I worry about him as he gets older and how he will make/keep friends. [ Reply | More ]

There is a book titled, if I remember correctly, Raising Exceptionally Gifted Children. I highly recommend it. There are numerous articles on www.hoagiesgifted.org and if you go to Davidson Institute's website, they have a messageboard. I highly recommend that you check them out. I don't mean to worry you but you will need the support of other moms of PG kids who have btdt... G/L!! [ Reply | More ]

I have a PG dc. I still think that it would be a huge mistake to walk in on day 1 saying anything about it. btdt [ Reply | More ]

maybe not day 1... but I think it reflects how sad our system is that these educators shun such discussions. PG kids also have a right to an education that fits them. [ Reply | More ]

Exactly. At dc's preK THEY brought up his unusual behavior and when I tried to explain, they acted like I was saying my dc was better than all the others when what I was really asking was for their understanding of his differences! [ Reply | More ]

My dc's PSD first said she didn't believe in giftedness. I never mentioned anything dc was able to do. But she had a change of heart and now believes in it, saying she witnessed some things dc could do that she never though a kid her age could do, etc... When you're lucky, you get a break like that... but most teachers make a poor identifiers of very gifted dc's. No wonder why many moms are forced to homeschool... [ Reply | More ]

look, if the teacher cannot see it, you are doing your dc no favors by shoving it down their throat. enrich yourself, and let the kid deal with the class day at first. trust me on this [ Reply | More ]

omg! she will not be taken seriously at all. the teacher will think she is nuts. let the kid get into K first and see how it goes. [ Reply | More ]

This is sad. Unfortunately, PG kids get screwed. I don't have a PG kid (and I am grateful for it bec I know how tough it is) but PG kids get NO help whatsoever. [ Reply | More ]
