I might get fired on Tuesday (as a part of a bunch of layoffs). I think I am actually OK with it for a variety of reasons (assuming I get what I think I will in severance), but worry that when it comes down to actually getting fired I might tear up. Any suggestions? I do not want to cry. [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

I read once many years (in Cosmopolitan, so consider the source) that if you can stop yourself from crying by holding your thumb and first finger in a rigid C shape- like try as hard as you can to make the finger and thumb touch without actually letting them touch (and making a C shape), and that somehow rewires the crying and though you feel like it, you don't. I swear to you this has worked, though it sounds absurd, through many meetings with my Ph.D. advisor when he was being horrible to me (and you can do it with two hands too). Needless to say, this should be done with your hands under the table. Good luck with the layoff- dh has been laid off twice, and each time has found better jobs with better pay (and we got to bank the severance) so I hope it all turns out well for you! [ Reply | More ]
