id you or DH make way more money than the other, and you have sep accounts, how do you proportion the household spending or decide what to contribute to the shared account? [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

I would not marry someone who wanted to "proportion" the bills in that way - we are a family. [ Reply | More ]

but for some couples proportioning the contribution to a joint account really works... [ Reply | More ]

Again, I don't understand this. Dh and I both pay different bills and make sure that we each have the same amount left over [ Reply | More ]

but how do you mean the 'same amnt' % of your check or a $ amount? [ Reply | More ]

Well, dh makes more than me. I'm in charge of some bills and he's in charge of others - he makes sure that we each have say, $1500 "extra" in our checking accounts a month [ Reply | More ]

i don't think it's nearly as formal as it sounds, but some couples don't put all their money into one pot. makes for too many arguments i guess [ Reply | More ]

np: we do this very informally. basically, we're lazy enough that we never got around the the joint account. but it also makes me feel somewhat more secure, b/c my dh is famously bad with money-- he spends it when he has it, without thinking about the upcoming bills. I like to know the mortgage isn't in the account he's drawing from... [ Reply | More ]

ita, i also like to have some power in my relationship as in "this is OURS", etc... i learned this lesson loong ago when i was bumming off my lawyer/roomie sister. every argument ended with "this is MY house!" [ Reply | More ]

np: it seems to happen sometimes when the woman makes more. Not always, but some women seem to feel justified keeping "their" money separate, while they view their husband's money as shared. [ Reply | More ]

and some women like to have some power in the relationship by sharing the household expenses. it's this way for me, anyway [ Reply | More ]

I think sharing the household expenses is a great thing. I'd feel very uncomfortable being totally financially "kept." But by the same token, I find it odd when women view their money as theirs alone, but their DH's money as "family money." [ Reply | More ]

yeah, i definitely agree. i don't spend my money on my clothes and then dh's on everything else. my salary goes to school tuitions for the most part, and investments. i think women who view their money as theirs ARE kept women just the same. it's the same mentality at the heart of it [ Reply | More ]

thanks to good old white collar sexism, dh makes many times my salary. sep accounts (even though we have them) are a gimick because i end up spending most of my money on things for dcs, where he actually buys things for himself [ Reply | More ]

to a shared acct you would contribute proportionate to what you make. IF dh makes 75k and you make 25k- you would 'pay' for 25% of the bills [ Reply | More ]

I don't get it. Don't you have the same finacial goals, views, etc? If not how can you stay married? [ Reply | More ]

what does sharing/not sharing an account have anything to do with your financial goals??? so silly to think sep accounts mean you don't have shared goals [ Reply | More ]

We don't have separate accounts, but we do have two accounts--one that DW uses solely for groceries etc. (which she likes to help her budget) and then a main account with everything else. [ Reply | More ]
