My ds has a tendency to talk to strangers and even follow families down the street to chat--whether they want to or not. It makes me nuts. Think it's because he's an only? [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

I think it's OK as long as they're with me. I also tell dc to not go anywhere with anyone without telling the grownup they're with. I don't want them to grow up fearful but I also encourage my very outgoing, friendly dcs to trust themselves and if something doesn't feel right, to stay away. [ Reply | More

that's completely unrealistic. a person in NYC talks to strangers a number of times on any given day. you need to teach dc to trust their instincts, and be specific about what is a normal interaction with an adult and what is not. and have the conversation repeatedly until you're sure they get it, which won't be for a while [ Reply | More

it isnt b/c he is an only child - my 4 yo (#1 of 3) will talk to ANYONE and will go off to play with people on the beach and i mean adults too not just kids her age [ Reply | More
