I can't stop crying tonight. My 6yo ds was diagnosed with autism 3 yrs ago and I'm just so tired. I had his IEP mtg today but they're recommending against the program I want, it's late May and I don't know where he'll be in Sept. I'm just so indescribably sad, I love him so much but sometimes this is so hard. [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

op - thank you, we've gone through it since he was 18mo and in EI, I'm just having such a dark night, so jealous of my sisters and their typical dc's. I wouldn't trade ds for all the world, I love him so much but the process of his education is so grueling. [ Reply | More ]

op - we wanted the asd Nest program but we're not getting it. They'll recommend a 12-1-1 but he's been there before and it wasn't appropriate. The other program they have, the 6-1-1 isn't appropriate either, too low functioning. Not sure where to turn, we have another meeting next week. [ Reply | More ]

Aren't the Nest programs less restrictive than 12-1-1? [ Reply | More ]

The Nest programs are specific to spectrum disorders. 12-1-1 are mixed disabilities and the teachers aren't specialized in autism. [ Reply | More ]

I know that. I just meant that in the argument of the least restrictive appropriate environment...sounds like if you had an expert to back up the nest program you could get it easily. [ Reply | More ]

What reason did they give you for the NEST program not working out? Do you have a lawyer? I think you need a lawyer. I also think it's very well worth it to call some of the SN privates. I think Reece is still taking applications and I know Aaron adds kids all the time if they're the right fit and there's room. [ Reply | More ]

That part does truly suck. But try Reece, try LearningSpring, try the Child School. They are all funded. [ Reply | More ]

op - sorry, missed you other question, he's made great progress but not up to snuff for Nest 1st grade, particularly in language. He's made great strides but not enough for that program. [ Reply | More ]

My dc is in the same sitch - could not handle the typical kids in NEST so we never formally applied. We have had a fantastic year in an SN private. You will have to do a full-court press with calling places but I bet it is NOT too late if your ds is the right kid for one of these schools. Any of the three above would probably serve him well. or: sounds like a SN private is right for you. Which I know is not an easy thing to hear because of all the obstacles that are in your way. [ Reply | More ]

The SN privates are literally meant for the kids who are stuck between these inappropriate choices. Which is why we always get our funding, either directly or via lawsuit. Because they KNOW that there is a large swath of the SN population that they are not serving. [ Reply | More ]

np. op i'm sorry to hear about this struggle. my dc has one more yr of nursery and we begin the process for k. it is helpful to hear about others experiences- and sad sometimes too. i'm gearing myself up for this battle soon. could you - or anyone on- share why NEST is better than SN private? Where is dc'c language that it's not considered 'up to snuff [ Reply | More ]

NEST is, in practice, really more for kids with Asperger's - kids who are very verbal and whose main issue is pragmatic language. [ Reply | More ]

not what you want to hear but sue doe. get him into private school that is appropriate and then sue sue sue. if they cannot provide appropriate placement they must pay for private. and there are clearly not enough spots and services for children with autism. [ Reply | More ]
