I live in Brooklyn and send my kid to the local crappy elementary school and frankly, I'm really not worried about their long term prospects. Then again, I went to the local crappy elementary school myself and ended up an Ivy league grad. I think that as long as you talk to your kid, take them to interesting places, make sure they read good books and learn how to reason independently, they will succeed without or without the fancy 25K a year education of superselective nerdy G & T schools. But hey, that's just me - thinking outside the box over here. [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

Many kids would fare better at a non crappy public school. [ Reply | More ]

op: unfortunately, those are precisely the type of kids who are stuck at the crappy schools without options. [ Reply | More ]

Also, sorry to say and I hope this is not true in your case but many kids would not have the results you had from a crappy school or flounder when they get to good colleges. [ Reply | More ]

op: depends on how crappy we're talking about. For example, I don't necessarily think that children need to be pushed to read at very young ages. On the other hand, I think the attitude that many public elementary schools have towards basic computational skills in math is appalling. [ Reply | More ]

Interestingly, public schools push reading earlier than many privates. [ Reply | More ]

I agree to some extent. You appear to be an intelligent, practical person and not all children can get from their parents what you have to offer your kids. These kids need the added support they will get from G&T schools. [ Reply | More ]

There is something between private schools/g&t and crappy publics. [ Reply | More ]

op: agreed. I meant ordinary public, not really "crappy" but not local and not selective either. [ Reply | More ]
