So I think that ultimately what is going to help my kids get into college is not which kindergarten they attend (or even which high school) but the fact that they are legacies at two ivy league colleges. While legacy is no sure thing these days, legacy admit rates are in the 40-50% range compared to 10% or so for general applicants. Therefore I am picking their schools based on the quality of life it will offer them rather than quality of college admittance [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

great but the fact that you and dh went to ivies will help them get into the schools deemed 'better' (if you go private)....and there is a large genetic component to IQ too, so chances are smart parents have smart kids. But I also think legacy is meaning less these days (for college) and in 18 years when your dc is applying it will probably mean very little unless you are a BIG donor/connected type (like the Bushes) [ Reply | More ]

Blech. There are so many terrific undergraduate opportunities these days. Yes, the Ivies are good, but there are equally good programs all over the country. My DH and I are both Ivy grads but I don't assume that our dds will end up attending Ivies, or even want to. [ Reply | More ]

Legacy rates are higher because they have been groomed to do all the other things that get you in; not b/c it is legacy. Correlation and causation are very different. (Didn't they teach you critical thinking at ivy?) [ Reply | More ]

Funny, I went to an Ivy but I don't want dd there. In my head I only think of a "really good school" as one like MIT or Stanford. Weird [ Reply | More ]

legacy at ivies count but not in meaningful way for college admissions unless you give oodles of cash and get involved in parents committee, alum cmte, etc. it doesn't help with nyc pivate admissions either since so many parents here are ivy alums. but good for you to pick a school based on quality of life-that is the way to do it. your other logic is wack though [ Reply | More ]
