I just found out that my 18 mo ds tested positive for a peanut allergy. Other than looking for the word "peanut", anything else I should avoid when I see it on food or lotion labels? TIA. [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

I suspect you are going to have to watch out for the "made at a facility that processes nuts and/or peanuts" part too. [ Reply | More ]

I think they just tested for peanuts, but we're supposed to avoid nuts in general. [ Reply | More ]

the reason I ask is because you can be just allergic to peanuts which isn't a nut. We got tested for all kinds of nuts [ Reply | More ]

Interesting. It was a mild reaction and they said he might outgrow it but to be cautious in the meantime. [ Reply | More ]

there are various support groups online that you should look up. you ALWAYS have to look at labeling EVERY TIME. My sister has found things to be safe one time and then not safe the next time she purchased it. [ Reply | More ]

i hope that your ds does grow out of it. my neice has gotten worse and worse every year. you'll also have to avoid eating out at asian restaurants(they use peanut oil...although supposedly the oil is fine since the allergy is based on the peanut protein, you never can be too careful. also they have a lot of peanuts in the food). this is hard for my sister because we are chinese! totally sucks. She has found that a lot of chain restauarants are good for peanut allergy kids. You'll have to do the research, I can't think of it off the top of my head. I know that at 18 mos, you aren't thinking about eating out like this, but when DS is older, you'll have to be extra vigilant. good luck! [ Reply | More ]

Thanks. My DH is Korean, so I was thinking about how the Asian food thing will be tricky!!! My DH's nephew is allergic to milk, eggs, and peanuts, and my SIL said that it's hardest with Asian foods (and she speaks fluent Korean) b/c you don't know what's in them 1/2 the time. [ Reply | More ]

yeah it really sucks. Is SIL your husband's sister? I am worried that my DC will have it! She is 2 and I haven't given her anything with nuts. When my neice was really young, my sister just brought food for her. [ Reply | More ]

SIL is DH's brother's wife. I hadn't planned on giving db anything with nuts until he was 3, per ped's advice. DB has eczema, so he's at an increased risk of allergies anyway. I would say avoid nuts as long as you can -- is there really a pressing need to introduce them early? [ Reply | More ]

i'm probably not going to introduce nuts utnil DD is 3. I accidently gave her something with pecans once and she seemed fine. My neice also had eczema really bad as well and I read that there is a link with peanut allergy. DD doesn't have eczema so I am hping we are clear. [ Reply | More ]

also watch certain things that you wouldn't suspect. for ex. some pretzles are made in a facility that peanut products are processed. cookies, etc. be careful and gl. [ Reply | More ]

OR from above: that is right. my sister says a certain brand of pretzel is OK and everything else is not good. She usually brings in treats for DD when it's someone's birthday like a cupcake or cookie that she made so DD doesn't miss out at school. [ Reply | More ]

I'm surprised your allergist didn't give you a handout. I'd call and see if they can fax or email you a list of foods you need to avoid. [ Reply | More ]

it wouldn't be comprehensive. OP will need to check labeling on all packaged foods [ Reply | More ]
