As much as I hope we get a spot at citywide, the thought of losing a year's tuition at the private pre-K we are enrolled in makes my stomach turn. 30K down the drain. it's better than paying that much for the next 9 years, though! But still...I wish there was a way to make them release us from our obligation to pay in full. Especially since they can fill the spot. Oh well. Maybe we won't even get offered a spot in citywide. why would you say that? anyone can make a tax deductable donation to a not for profit school. This is what is usually done if someone pulls out after they have paid. [ Reply | More ]

This only works if the school is willing to give you a receipt indicating that it was a donation, not a tuition obligation. BTDT and private would not do this. [ Reply | More ]

no pity from me, if you are willing to take the citywide spot and forgo the money you don't need it [ Reply | More ]

np: what do you mean "don't need it"? Is it your position that nobody sacrifices to send their kid to private school? That every child there has parents who can afford to burn $20-30K? [ Reply | More ]

OP: Trust me, we need it. Lots of sacrifices went into spending that money. That's why I'm hoping we can go public! [ Reply | More ]

of course if we have to. But it would be much nicer if we didn't have to! that's why we are hoping for citywide placement. [ Reply | More ]

With hardly any public pre-k seats available the thought that you would take one from someone who needs it when you have already paid 30k for one at a private and will just give up that money really pisses me off. [ Reply | More ]

OP: I have NOT taken a public pre-K spot. My child is entering public KINDERGARTEN. For private she would be in pre-K but for Public she would be in K, as is the case for kids born between September and the end of the year. I have not taken a spot from anyone, but if offered a citywide placement I will give up our private spot and leave room for someone on the waitlist at the private Pre K. [ Reply | More ]

OP: Thank you yes you are correct. And I WILL take the spot if offered. I did not apply only to turn down the public spot. If my DD gets into a public citywide for K then I will accept the spot and give her privat Pre K spot up, leaving room for someone on the waitlist. just wish I could gt the money back. Oh, so nobody who's kid got into private should be holding out hope for public? Get real. Not the parents' faults that the DOE notifies months after the privates. [ Reply | More ]

I hope that you realize that you are complaining to many of us who cannot even dream of paying for a single year of private tuition. So don't expect much sympathy here. [ Reply | More ]

Please, this board is full of people who can afford tuition. YOU are in the minority on this board. [ Reply | More ]

what do you think average household income is on the board. An what HHI could afford 30k? To me that is an enormous amount of money to just let go. What would have been so terrible to have kid go to a regular school the first year and after knowing about G&T results, if negative, applying to the private the next year? [ Reply | More ]

What is "a regular school"? You mean zoned public? Not an option. And from a financial standpoint, I'd lose more than the cost of tuition if I sold my apartment and moved in this economy. Currently own a large apartment with a bedroom for each of my two children plus an extra office/guest room/junk room. Very nice for NYC and if I sold now I could not find the same for even close to equal money. No way moving for public K was going to be worth it, and zoned public K is not an option for us. I could afford it with no retirement savings, living simply and no vacations. I will be in his position next year. My zoned school, ps145, sucks. [ Reply | More ]

They need a disincentive for people to do exactly what you're doing. They don't want to have to scramble and do more work. You signed a contract and knew exactly what you were getting into. Just because you changed your mind doesn't mean you don't have to honor it. [ Reply | More ]

The only public that is as good as even a non-tt private is Anderson imo. I certainly wouldn't turn down private for Nest or TAG. [ Reply | More ]

Why not? I have a spot at a private but I am hoping for NEST (Anderson is too much of a long shot)- if we get in I plan to fork over the dough. 1 year of tuition is better than 13. [ Reply | More ]

There was no comparison between the work being done at NEST vs many of the privates we toured this year. NEST blew them away, at least at the K-3 level [ Reply | More ]

ITA from the private schools I toured the work at NEST is better than some privates. But it certainly seems a bit sterile. No great art on the walls. Academically great - but what about the other stuff? [ Reply | More ]

I saw a lot of art on the walls at NEST. If my dc ends up needing more/better art instruction (or music or dance or athletics) we'll provide that after school. I wouldn't go to a private school because of the art on the walls, when I don't even have a sense of my own dcs artistic abilities/inclinations. And I have trouble with the word "sterile" and NEST. It was clean, and orderly, from what I could tell. Which I greatly prefer over messy and chaotic, at least for my calm dc. [ Reply | More ]

I never toured any privates, but the student work I viewed at NEST was very mediocre compared to what I saw at Anderson. [ Reply | More ]

grow up -- and for god's sake, don't complain to the times if you end up losing the tuition. think of the 20K as very pricey school insurance -- you paid for the certainty of a great school for your kid. [ Reply | More ]
