How do you know if you found a good therapist? I went to someone last week and although she was nice I didn't like her calling me 'honey, sweetie' when she didn't even know me. She also was really really overweight and had lots of physical ailments that were kind of distracting. Sounds so mean to say it...but it didn't feel like i thought therapy should feel like. She was a social worker who also worked as a therapist that I found through my insurance. Is it better to go with a doctor? No flames please I'm trying to find someone that can really help me. I would not necessarily go with a doctor. There are some great social workers out there. I would get a recommendation from someone if possible. [ Reply | More

the key to effective therapy is finding someone you're comfortable with. if you weren't comfortable with her, find another one. btw CSW's are perfectly qualified to be therapists [ Reply | More

Put the word out to your friends - ask if anyone knows of a good therapist/psychiatrist/psychologist (you don't have to say they're for you if you don't want to). Word of mouth is usually the best way to go. [ Reply | More

Where are you? I am a psychologist and can probably help you find someone else, so that you can compare. FWIW I would have felt uncomfortable with what you described. [ Reply | More
