Amnio or not? I'll be 36 when I deliver. I'm leaning towards having it. [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

np: that's only 75% accurate. That's ok for some ppl but if you want to know 100% then go with Amnio [ Reply | More ]

just had nt and it is close to 91%. I had #2 at 36 and we opted out because our NT looked good and dh and I agreed we were moving forward no matter what. [ Reply | More ]

I had to know. for me: better to be prepared. some, obviously, don't need to know. totally personal and not everyone decides to have one for the same reasons... [ Reply | More ]

I just went through this. Said I would skip the amnio. Then my 20wk sonogram turned up a heart defect linked to a genetic disorder. Had to get amnio, which ruled out the disorder, but turned up a random, rare microdeletion. All of this took weeks to roll out, and we missed the window to terminate (not that we wanted to, but the option wasn't there). Next time, I'm getting CVS. Very, very nerve-wracking. I think it's better to know. Signed, 36 next week and 27 wks pg [ Reply | More ]

^^^ also, I said before I had the amnio that I would never terminate. but when you're looking at the possibility of having a child with massive health problems PLUS a high chance of both autism and schizophrenia . . . well, things look different. I realized I could never say never. [ Reply | More ]

is that the prognosis? I hope things turn out better than you expect. tons of good thoughts to you. [ Reply | More ]

no, luckily that's the prognosis that was ruled out. the rare microdeletion means that ds will be normal in every way, but infertile. it feels like a blessing compared to the other options that were on the table. [ Reply | More ]

OP: I'm just thinking that if I lived out in the suburbs with tons of money I could possibly raise a child with downs or something else, but I'm struggling so much that it wouldn't really be fair. It's so hard of a decision and probably not one that can be made in the abstract. [ Reply | More ]

even at 36, odds are in your favor that all is well. (I'm sure they told you this.) good luck with your decision. [ Reply | More ]

if that's how you're feeling, I would strongly recommend you get the amnio. I actually was not willing to terminate for Down's, but I discovered a whole world of far worse (and far better) conditions I was never aware of. [ Reply | More ]
