Summer reading list arrived home from school today...dc has read most of it (particularily in certain categories). Do you think we should ask for more recs? [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

dc is pretty prolific and dcs are required to note the books that they read fromt he list (answer a few questions) for at least 4 books. Most of those dc hasn't read are at a much lower level than dc currently reads. I'm sure dc will read nearly a book per day this summer. [ Reply | More ]

I think it is best to reread some books off the list. Tere is value in rereading. Otherwise you are teaching child that if he has already done something, he doesn't need to do it again for classwork. This leads to many problems including 1) child feeling superior and not listening, 2) child reading something too early and not getting it at the level that he would if he read it later, 3) child feeling like he doesn't need to do something for school if he has done it before (and what a child has done and thinks he has done often differ--even if they don't, the teacher might be using it for a learning purpose that neither you nor he is aware of. This is a bad habit that can hurt learning skills throughout childs life.) [ Reply | More ]

1. Then that's a dumb-ass assignment, and I have to wonder about a school that would give it. 2. I didn't mean to imply you don't have the right to post this here; of course you do. But really, it's not so tough to figure out. If that's truly the assignment, then just mention the issue briefly to his teacher next time you see her and ask if it's a problem if ds goes off the list. No big deal! [ Reply | More ]
