I have ALWAYS had trouble breathing even during very mild exercise. Ever since I was a little kid. Was never overweight. Now, I'm trying to exercise every day and get into it more and it's making it really hard to exercise. I can't run more than a mile, not because I get tired, but because I can't catch my breath. Is this normal?? How can I exercise if I can't DO anything? TIA [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

you may have asthma or even allergy or exercise induced asthma. Please see a doctor about this before trying rigorous exercise. It might come down to an inhaler or something, but see a doctor. Trouble breathing is no joke. I had asthma as a kid. [ Reply | More ]

MD mom--could there be something wrong with me? I am afraid that I'm going to go to the doctor and they're going to say, you're out of shape, go exercise, suck it up. But I've been like this since I was very little. [ Reply | More ]

np: I'm not an MD, but it could be an issue with your heart. I'm not trying to be alarmist, but there could be something with one of the valves and whether it's allowing oxygenated blood to go backwards instead of forward to the rest of your body. It's probably not serious since you've been like this all of your life, but it could be something that could get worse if you don't get it checked. (I say this because my FIL who was very athletic suddenly had trouble exercising and it turned out to be a problem with a valve. It was fixed and he's back to normal. Granted, the dude's 70, but still better to have it checked out just for peace of mind.) [ Reply | More ]

exercise induced asthma would be my guess, not a big deal, easy to diagnose. Get thee to a pulmonologist for pulm function testing. treat with an inhaler before excercise. [ Reply | More ]

OK, what doctor do I go to? I have a CNM who I see yearly for pap smears, etc, but I don't have a regular doctor. The health plan at the university where I work has a drop in clinic for acute situations, but I feel like I need a GP, but I don't have one really... TIA [ Reply | More ]

That is 5 mph which is very fast for a beginning runner. Try 4.0 or even 3.5 and it will make a world of difference. BTDT. [ Reply | More ]

OK, thanks. I honestly don't think I can run any slower than I do though... I am 6 feet tall and have very long legs and a long stride, if that makes a difference. I'll try to slow down, but you can only run so slowly! [ Reply | More ]

OP I am 6 feet tall too! I think our size really makes a difference when it comes to speed and endurance. Try brisk walking at 4.0 and alternate with mini "sprints" at 5.0 I bet your endurance is going to ramp way up in no time. [ Reply | More ]

i'm just like you. my solution, if not the healthiest, is just not to do aerobic stuff that really does that to me. i walk, bike, but not the heavy aerobic speed/routes. i do yoga. frankly i feel like that's good enough [ Reply | More ]

ITA that you should see a doctor about this. Very strange. You might also want to do some yoga that focuses on breathing. It's possible that you are just holding your breath during exercise. I have to consciously keep my breathing deep and even while exercising: four counts in, four counts out. When I have to go to three in, three out, that's the speed I want to keep. [ Reply | More ]

OP I am very into yoga and do it several times a week in a class. I've gotten much stronger and more flexible, feel great, but I still can't do anything that involves aerobic activity for more than 10 minutes. [ Reply | More ]
