Any parents of kids with separation anxiety send them in for the ERB in school yet? My 4.5 yo is set to take it at school some time over the next week and I'm not sure if I should mention it to her at home (i.e., "A nice teacher is going to do some fun workbooks with you"), or just let it unfold and not mention it for fear of prevoking anxiety about the unknown. TIA for any advice. [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

Don't bring it up is my advice. I don't know the situation at your school, but at ours the erb tester is not a stranger and has been introduced to the dc. [ Reply | More ]

Unfortunately this will be a stranger, but it will be in a room that the DCs are used to. [ Reply | More ]

I mentioned it to my DD last year. It didn't seem to be an issue for her. I think it was very helpful that it was in the school library where she was comfortable. In any event, the teachers tell the kids a little about the test (e.g., that they're going to meet a teacher and do special work) so it's not a new concept to them. [ Reply | More ]

i'd mention it, then go from there. when my dc took it, the tester visited the classroom 2x before the actual test day to observe my dc and two other kids who were taking the erb's that year. so may not be a total stranger. also, ask teachers for advice, they go through this all the time [ Reply | More ]

To get my very shy DD ready, I asked the teacher to show DD a picture of the tester and to tell DD the tester's name. Very helpful IMO. [ Reply | More ]
