Brearley's visible diversity numbers - they seem to get these kids in HS only or something because lower school has hardly any. They were like that 10 years ago and still like that today. [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

Why don't they make more an effort to get these kids for lower school? [ Reply | More ]

Because they want to make sure to only get the best and the brightest? [ Reply | More ]

As if kids of color are not the best and the brightest in lower school? WTF? [ Reply | More ]

Meaning that the school doesn't want a lot of minority kids unless they are sure that they will get into great colleges [ Reply | More ]

So apparently, they think only white girls will make it to great colleges... actually, they admit more $$$ kids for K, so maybe that makes sense financially. [ Reply | More ]

No - to the contrary. The very smart minority girls who come in at MS & HS will get into great colleges. [ Reply | More ]

But what I'm saying is they don't admit smart girls of color into K. [ Reply | More ]

It's a balance. Many white families, esp those who opt for SS, will not think a school is that great if there are too many non-white kids there. You see it on UB over and over again. [ Reply | More ]

Do you think it's especially true for SS parents to think like that?? Compared to coed? [ Reply | More ]

I think on the whole SS parents are more conservative, more traditional. [ Reply | More ]

np-right in general. They take them later, which is what oP noticed and they take them later, when it's harder to get in because you have to be really, really smart to do so. These kids are getting into top colleges. [ Reply | More ]

not sure if it's harder per se, but testing at 4yo is not as reliable. is that what you mean? but the school admits white girls based on erb anyway. [ Reply | More ]

only mentioning bec I know many girls of color who got 99 erb (not prepped) whose behavior match the score didn't get in. [ Reply | More ]

I guess I am saying that testing a 4 yr old isn't as reliable, but also that admission later is based on so much more than test scores. A kid can test well, but be a total slacker or test ok, but be really driven...so I think getting in later is harder because a student is really judged on more criteria. [ Reply | More ]

Hey, Early Steps has nothing to do with income first of all. There is NO shame in going thru ES. You are one of those rich people of color who probably think using ES or PP is ghetto or something. Grow up! [ Reply | More ]

np-not sure that she really is...Prep for Prep kids enter privates usually at 6th grade and that does provide a lot of diversity at these mostly white schools. That may be why theOP is noticing that it is more diverse in the upper grades than the lower school. [ Reply | More ]

This is what gives US a bad naem-completely ignorant posts. All these schools are falling over themselves to get smart diversity candidates. Ther problem i B,C,S,Trinity and Dalton are fighting over the same relatively small pool of very strong diversity students. [ Reply | More ]

It's a great program that mentors and prepares high scoring kids from disadvantaged backgrounds for admission to independent schools (7th grade at my dc's K-8 school), 9th grade at many high schools. They follow and support the kids after admission also. [ Reply | More ]

Yes I am. If you look at Prep for Prep's website, you will not that it is for AA, Latino, and Asian students and that they provide financial aid for qualified families--many times full tuition, but not bus transportation. I have to say that the kids whom I have met at our school who come from this program really need this opportunity. They come from terrible neighborhoods with terrible schools and a lot of pressure not to be a good student. Some show an astounding level of maturity, responsibility, and leadership qualities that I don't think I possessed until I was well into college. Generally, they have gone to schools afterward that many on this board consider TT. It is a great program. [ Reply | More ]

Here's the website: http://www.prepforprep.org/prepforprep/ The current governor of Massachusetts, Deval Patrick, was in a similar program, A Better Chance, that helps kids get into boarding schools. [ Reply | More ]
