Just a vent...I can't stand the social worker at my DD's school. She's such an alarmist. I feel like she's constantly pointing out stuff and saying it's "concerning". I realize my kid has issues...if she didn't have these behaviors, she wouldn't need to be in a special needs preschool class! [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

I know. It's actually turning me off to the school a little bit because I feel like if DD were someplace else, perhaps I wouldn't deal with it as much. I feel like she is sooo microanalyzed. Every little quirk. [ Reply | More ]

Ugh. Our SEIT was like this - she never mentioned any positives in her book home, the only time she ever wrote was for something that "worried" her. We wouldn't hear from her for weeks on end, but if we did it was always negative. [ Reply | More ]

Exactly. I feel like every time I meet with her there's something she's "concerned" about. Yet whenever I observe DD, she seems like she's doing great and all of her therapists remark on her progress. I'm not saying that there is not more work to be done...but if she didn't have issues to be concerned about, why would she need to be there? [ Reply | More ]

Your daughter is there to justify the social worker's viewpoint and world. Sorry to say, not uncommon in the profession. [ Reply | More ]

I've found that many (social workers in particular) are incredibly rigid and pathologize everything a kid does. Sometimes, it's almost as though the kids are case studies they are reading and they've never actually met a child before! [ Reply | More ]

np: I have to say that this is not my experience. Most of the social workers I have worked with, I have to NAG them to help me get my child more services. My old social worker at SN preschool and I had some historic fights about after-school therapy: she kept telling me I was going to damage dc, who "had enough to deal with" at school, existing therapies, etc. She was wrong! But she made me really upset. [ Reply | More ]

Well, the not listening or understanding kids are individuals part sounds right. I have yet to meet one that isn't into services, but I'm sure it's just a matter of time. [ Reply | More ]

She was an anomaly. I may have gotten lucky but all my EI service coordinators (except for one who actively tried to deny my dc services and I had to really fight) have been lovely women who really cared about my dc and doing the right thing. [ Reply | More ]

I have found EI to be nothing like CPSE and, even worse, CSE. [ Reply | More ]

No question there. I am not really dealing with social workers now that we are in CSE. [ Reply | More ]

I found that to be true in NYC. Just moved to NJ, and they LOVE the social workers here. Social worker is your main contact. Long story, but the social worker here actually threatened to report us! [ Reply | More ]

Ugh! That's awful. It also sounds like a fundamental difference between private SN and public? Are you happy in NJ otherwise? [ Reply | More ]
