Could anyone walk me through what the allergist will do tomorrow when I take my DS in for a suspected food allergy? DS became covered in hives on Monday, came back on Tuesday with swollen eyes and mouth, spent the night in the ER, and now starts to break out again the minute the benadryl starts to wear off (even though he's also on steroids). Will they know immediately with the skin test, or does it take a few days for the results to be apparent on the skin? [ Reply | More ]

it's about ten minutes to see a reaction. so you'll know before you leave. [ Reply | More ]

Thank you. We can't figure out what it could be, he hasn't eaten any new foods recently (he's 7yo). [ Reply | More ]

how old is ds? they did the full 50 skin tests and he turned up allergic to everything, even the control. and in reality he isn't allergic to anything. [ Reply | More ]

7yo. Did your child have an anaphylactic (sp?) event before the testing? [ Reply | More ]

skin testing is not 100% accurate. Is there something environmental? Latex, chlorine, pets, cleaning products, detergent...a change in formulations could have triggered it. [ Reply | More ]

We were worried about that. But the ER doctor said DS had a classic "boomerang" reaction (second reaction after taking antihistamine which is much worse than original reaction), which is typical of food allergies and not environmental ones (where you just keep getting the same reaction). Of course we want the allergist to look into everything, I'm just going by what the ped on call at the ER said. [ Reply | More ]
