SAHM, how do you carve out a life for yourself? I'm an out-of-work WOHM about to transition to full-time at home because I can't find something that makes it worth going back to work on my terms (no more crazy hours, travel, etc.) I'm looking forward to more time with my kids but worry I won't have a life anymore - so much of what I loved to do was tied to my job. I have so much more of a life. Meet my friends at the gym while the kids not in school are at the babysitting there. We go for coffee. Park and playdates with the kids. I have so much more time to socialize with my friends, so I love it. [ Reply | More ]

this all sounds very nice so don't read this the wrong way, but is that enough? it sounds kind of like a vacation and I think I'd enjoy it for a few weeks... and then wonder what I'm supposed to be "doing" with my time... accomplishing something in some way. not meant to flame, so apologies. i really just don't get it. OR- I work p-t so for me its plenty. But even without the work aspect, kids are only little once so yes, I think its enough temporarily. There is always career/work, volunteering, down the road. Well, gl. [ Reply | More ]

Yeah, you'll get bored and you'll wonder what in the hell you are doing with your time. If there is any way to somehow stay active in your field, lecture, teach, write, ect... try to do it so you can balance both. [ Reply | More ]

OP: that to me is ideal I just haven't figured out how to do it yet to make enough money to pay for the sitter and have it be worth it. really floundering here. so much of my identity was tied up in my career. [ Reply | More ]

I know people who do this and it doesn't cover the babysitter. But the cost of staying active and keeping up their network while still having time with their child is worth it to them. [ Reply | More ]

so much of your identity tied up in your career? Big mistake (but understandable)! At the end of your life are you going to regret not working more? Probably not - you will regret not spending time with loved ones. [ Reply | More ]

np: it's a very different lifestyle. at work, you have goal-oriented activities. you get a project done, you close the deal, you put out quarterly numbers. Being a sahm is different. the activity *is* the goal. It's not for everyone but i think more people would be happy with it if they realized that they have to mark accomplishments differently [ Reply | More ]

you put the kid in nursery for a few hours/days per week. Also, join book clubs etc... to meet other adult people. [ Reply | More ]

Is there anyone left on the planet who hasn't heard the "only boring people get bored" crap? Please, for the love of god, stop saying it. It is BORING. [ Reply | More ]

I take classes, and have active hobbies I do with friends (play in a band for one). I also write music - not well, but it is fun and very fulfilling. [ Reply | More ]

What is your profession? There are lots of volunteer opportunities where you could exercise or even stretch your career muscles. The SAHM life is a different pace, but it is what YOU make of it. You can't wait for the good stuff to find you. [ Reply | More ]
