Please share some good games to help my infant learn his name. he is 8 mos and responds to his name 50% of the time. I am worried since my older one is on the spectrum. [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

You do realize that you are on the SN board and OP already has one child on the spectrum? I don't blame her for being worried. OP, if you're concerned, why not ask #1's therapists to give you some activities you can do? It is NOT true that it's so black and white, that a child is fine or not; if your child is showing signs (and I don't know that yours is yet, of course), there's a lot you can do at this age. I would lean heavily on your existing team. [ Reply | More ]

np below: My child is SN. I understand why OP is worried, I was too with #2. But you cannot change whether your child is SN by trying to get them respond to their name at only 8 months. I'm not saying she shouldn't get early intervention if the child does indeed have an issue. [ Reply | More ]

I totally agree. BUT I kind of felt the same way with my second - felt that I was just waiting, waiting for db to roll over, for example - and talked to some of #1's therapists who said "Oh sure, here are some exercises you can do." Which I did and that helped. I'm saying that likely OP can learn some good and helpful techniques for interacting with #2 whether or not she seeks intervention. That will help her feel less worried and helpless and more proactive. And, OP, let me just say: there is every reason to schedule a "well child" visit for your second with #1's developmental ped. It might be good to set this up for around 12 months and would be great for establishing a baseline, no matter what happens (although if you see db pointing, waving, saying words, answering to name, and following directions by 12mo then you could probably cancel it!). the np: I get the fear. Just try not to let it rob you of the joy of your new baby. If the dev ped or an EI eval will reassure you, definitely do it. [ Reply | More ]

I am sorry and I know that fear well. I lived that fear. The best antidote to it is action. Hang in there. [ Reply | More ]

Got it. I would stay away from the neuro, they are not nearly as helpful and also don't know how to tell early signs, if db does have them. The thing about an EI dev ped or psych is that you can't see them through EI unless your db is IN EI. So it's kind of a catch-22. We had a private dev ped I took db to for a baseline at 7mos and I'm really glad I did. Does the EI psych see patients privately? Does he or she take insurance? If not, tell where you are and we can suggest names. For example, Prashil Govind in Queens is well regarded and he takes insurance. [ Reply | More ]

np: I realize you are worried. But your DB is either fine or not. No games are going to change that. And most likely DB is fine. [ Reply | More ]

I try singing the name to dc. Make up a song with dc's name, something where you keep repeating it. [ Reply | More ]
