anyone have a friend who has no interest in watching the news? I have a friend who is well traveled, speaks 5 languages, educated and smart but he has no interest in what goes on in the world. says it is too depressing and he gains nothing from it. I'm a news junkie and find it so strange. [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

ITA with your friend. The news is always so depressing. There have actually been studies that people who watch the news tend to be more depressed, so I think your friend is pretty smart. [ Reply | More ]

but isn't it important to be informed about what's happening in the world? I cant decide if he's doing the right thing or burying his head in the sand. [ Reply | More ]

because he made me rethink my idea that it's important to know whats going on in the world. We had a long conversation about it and I was curious what others thought. Do you not have dialog with people about things? Why can't I talk about this? why do you have such a negative reaction and resort to all caps? why do YOU care? [ Reply | More ]

np: i'm like your friend as well. there's not much i can do from where i am for all the terrible things happening in the world. reading up on the details is not going to make a difference. i can support causes and groups, i can elect people i think are going to make a positive difference. but beign a news junkie is not going to make the world a better place. ^^^i also think it reflects different philosophies and personalities. there are "macro" people who worry about the world and the environment and causes and big things. and then there are micro people who try to live simply and make the biggest positive impact on their own little corner of the world. and then there are people who just don't care. I used to be a big news junkie and found I am much happier not knowing. I give to charity, I do care about human beings, but the snippets I hear are ENOUGH. [ Reply | More ]

Sounds like a kind of Taoist approach. I am a reformed news junkie. I pay attention, but I don't get too wrapped up in it. I gain much more pleasure from the news my friends and family have in their own lives. I actually am a much happier person now than I was when I was super wrapped up in it. [ Reply | More ]
