Mom's side is Irish. We drank at her family's wakes. Hell, my grandmother's wake and the funeral the next day was one of the best family parties I have ever had/been to. Asking is not offensive. Define wake. Do you mean the viewing at the funeral home? if so, no dinking unless you are an alcoholic, or an ass. Sometimes people have a meal or get together after the funeral, and sometimes people drink then. [ Reply | More

My Aunt in Dublin dropped dead several years ago. Wakes in Ireland are generally a private family affair, then the body is removed to the church. The funeral after party generally has a LOT of drinking, as does the one year anniversary of the death. [ Reply | More
