How do you know if your child needs to be in a special needs preschool? My dd is currently 20 mos and we'll be applying her for preschool in the fall. She is in EI for global delays and isn't talking yet. But I don't know anything about special needs preschools. How do you know which type of schools to apply to? [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

When your dd is 27mo call your local public school and ask for a child study team evaluation. They'll probably tell you to write a letter making a formal request. They'll walk you through it from there. SN pre-school starts at age 3. [ Reply | More ]

We were thinking of sending dd to a private preschool (we live in an urban area where the schools aren't great). The app process begins before she's 27 mos. Should we apply to private preschools and then see what happens with the SN process? [ Reply | More ]

that's what I did. ds was in private preschool starting at 2.5 and then we switched to public when he turned 3 and got in. Our town has an AMAZING sn preschool! Check yours out (ask dd's therapist what they know about it, mine knew a lot), because sometimes even crummy public schools have great sn programs. It's tends to be something public schools do well. I have been so, so happy with ours. ds also has global delays and he has made incredible progress there. [ Reply | More ]

OR is sounds like you are in NJ. These things tend to be pretty state specific. [ Reply | More ]

A Developmental Pediatrician is the person who can help you with the best course of action going forward. If you are in NY we (on the sn board) can provide names of good Dev Peds. [ Reply | More ]
