who's in favor of holding back dc from starting kindergarden if they are 2 weeks before the cutoff? (boy by the way) [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

yeah I knew I was screwing that up as I was typing it. I made a decision last year to hold my ds back, had him repeat the 3's now going into pre-k. I'm being told by many people not to hold him back b/c he's so smart. argh [ Reply | More ]

we went public with a fall ds. were worried like you are now. cannot tell you how well it has worked out. private schools have brainwashed us to believe K kids need to be 6 going on 7 to succeed. my ds has absolutely blossomed with the demands of K, and cannot imagine him sitting in preschool now waiting for K. he was shy and that too has changed for the better. i have now come to believe the worry, coddling and holding back is absolutely wrong and counter development [ Reply | More ]

oh man, now I"m really confused...but let me ask you, when is his b-day? city cut off is 12/31, and you may be talking about an oct b-day or something...I'm in LI and my cut off is 12/1, ds is literally 10 days before that. [ Reply | More ]

see my lost below (DH has b-day in lasts days of Dec.!). Relaly depends on kids. BUt I do think its sad to hold a kid back for no particular reason. SOMEONE has to be the youngest and oldest! [ Reply | More ]

I hate the fact that public schools everywhere have different dates -- it is absurd w/in NY State they can't even get it together [ Reply | More ]

we put our dd in public 2 weeks before cut off as well - I really want her to repeat...being the youngest presents a variety of issues. She is able to "keep up" but if she had been born 2 weeks later she would be able to soar vs just "keep up" - competing with children who are 11 1/2 months older is rough on a lot of level - even when a child is smart and well liked...simple physical and developmental issues are not in synch. depends on kid. My 5.4 y.o. (in K, late Dec b-day) is very smart, tall physically, social, and retains info very well so he has no more problems than any other kid adjusting to K [ Reply | More ]

OP: my problem is I really don't know how my ds will do socially b/c he tends to do better in small groups and is not an assertive boy. He's sweet, has friends but has issues with eye contact (it's just how he is) also not so good at sports yet but quite smart [ Reply | More ]

well how is he in pre-k? Did you ask his teachers (I did-they said send him no question). if he is very smart I would send him. [ Reply | More ]

here's the problem. I already made this decision last year and held him back in the 3's (we moved to the burbs late in school year so he wasn't really repeateing the year) so he hasn't done pre-k yet. The thing is, he gets homework that's kindergarten level. Academically I was told he wouldn't really be missing anything but I'm kicking myself for being "so sure" last year. My dh and I couldn't find any advantage of him being the youngest but now I"m questioning it and going crazy! [ Reply | More ]

not a done deal...I can send him if I want. there's no real reason he can't skip pre-k. and YES I'm driving myself crazy. [ Reply | More ]

oh I get it. He could skip from 3's to k. As someone who resents all the kids who turned 6in the fall, while my ds turned FIVE in Dec., I say send him. BUt you have to feel good about your decision. I can tell you that there are many fall/Dec. kids I know whose parents did NOT hold them back and they are doing just fine. depends on kid. [ Reply | More ]

oh incidentally, my dd's b-day is end of dec and she misses the cut -off in my district so she'll be the oldest also. I honestly can't predict what would be best for my son but I'm hating myself for not doing pre-k this year [ Reply | More ]

i'm sorry; I can see what you're going through. Can you ask the 3's teacher AND ask the pre-k teacher (the one who is used to judging readiness, even though she doesnt relaly know your son yet) [ Reply | More ]

I'll be honest, everyone has an opinion so it's a 50-50 chance of what they'll say. I"ve already polled so many people and so many simply believe in holding them back and some don't. Now with my son, some don't, his teacher says how smart he is but she can see why I was concerned socially. But I'm sure if he was in pre-k all year with those kids, he would've been fine. oh well... yeah; everyone has their own opinion. That's why ds's teachers' opinions were so impt to me. they're not giving you a strong answer though. sorry. ;( [ Reply | More ]

amen to this poster! It is so hard to watch the kids turn 6 in the fall when my little one did not turn 5 until late December. What a crock...the year makes a difference - we wish we had been able to start a year later instead of forced in and are now trying to figure out if we should repeat or let dc keep struggling to match up to kids a full year or more older.
