I need serious recommendations for towns within commuting distance to NYC with great public schools. Would prefer a rural feel to a suburban feel, but crunchy suburb would be OK, too. TIA!! [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

If you want rural check out Somerset county. Crunchy would be Maplewood and Montclair would be a lot of x-NYers. [ Reply | More ]

www.greatschools.net or .org is a good website. In terms of Schools - Irvington is best, Hastings is next and Dobbs Ferry last - all are good schools. [ Reply | More ]

I did this once on a larger radius, using (I think) US News & World Report high school rankings. Basically, think Long Island. There are a whole bunch of excellent schools out there. If you want rural, too, you have to go pretty far from NYC. Like two hours far. Nyack schools are good, as is the one in Cold Spring. [ Reply | More ]

You are going to have a long commute for rural and LI. -np. IMHO, the only rural left on LI is North Fork (maybe north shore of south fork.) [ Reply | More ]

but.... think twice about this move. some nyc schools are great, and think about how great for a kid to grow up there, and not drive when he/she's a teen, etc. [ Reply | More ]

I have also heard Basking Ridge Schools are excellent - and that area of NJ (past Morristown) is very pretty although I don't know if the people are crunchy. South Orange/Maplewood/Montclair schools get mixed reviews so look in to them before buying carefully but there are nice old houses and people are at least in theory a little bit more crunchy - although, my friends there are not necessarilly crunchy. I would have to do more research before commiting myself. Irvington, in Westchester is also supposed to have great schools and be sort of artsy. Places with worse commutes that feel rural are Pennington, NJ and Easton, CT. So nice in both! [ Reply | More ]

i cant recommend princeton, NJ more highly. They have a 45 minutes express train to NYC. Definitely not a typical suburban feel - tons of farms, but also a great walkable downtown, a lot of land and tons to do. Public schools are excellent there. [ Reply | More ]

I am the poster above that spoke about Basking Ridge and went on. Princeton HS is great and the surrounding areas like Pennington, etc. are very rural (good schools there). I would not commute from there personally though, it's very far. Westport is also gorgeous and rural and too far for me personally. People are not crunchy in either place. Katonah, Westport and Princeton are my favorite towns. [ Reply | More ]
